Ratio 10.11.2020

Riparian Acoustics' latest newsletter (which profiles a bunch of Bandcamp Friday offerings) profiles a release that was recorded in our beloved space during our first year of existence. Sarah Peebles' "Delicacies in the Garden of Plenty", features trios with her, Kyle Brenders, and Nilan Perera captured by Mechanical Forest Sound at the release show for her album "Delicate Paths" (on unSounds). This new album is a benefit release for food rescue organization Second Harvest. Head on over to the Riparian page for more info about this recording and other exciting releases. RIP Ratio/ Long Live Ratio.

Early in Ratio's existence, we hosted an album release event for Sarah Peebles' wonderful "Delicate Paths" album on the Unsounds imprint of Andy Moor (Ex) and Yannis Kyriakides. The event, which included her playing sho in a trio with Nilan Perera and Kyle Brenders, was documented by the ubiquitous Joe Strutt. Peebles has decided to release some of the music performed that night alongside some of her electroacoustic compositions through a Bandcamp page that's recently been established by Second Harvest, Canada's largest food rescue organization. All proceeds from this recording go toward this venerable cause. We encourage you to donate generously and immerse yourself in this curious tapestry of sound.

Some of you might fondly recall one particular performance near the end of our existence headlined by the great and innovative pedal steel guitarist, Susan Alcorn. Well here's an excellent opportunity to check her out again in her first Toronto engagement since 2016. Riparian Acoustics, and the Canadian Music Centre have collaborated with the wonderful Women From Space to bring this excellent show to you tomorrow night at the Burdock. Alcorn will be heard alongside three other brilliant and unique solo artists Nova Scotian nylon string surrealist Amy Brandon, abstract keyboard queen Yunjin Claire Lee, and Vancouver's Elisa Thorn Music (who has recently made a record with Yuko Zama's excellent elsewhere label). Back in 2016 when brought Susan Alcorn to town we also coordinated with the great people at ZULA Presents to arrange a show for her in Hamilton. Let it be known that they're also responsible for this unbelievable festival coming up next week! Headlined by the brilliant Iva Bittová, it also includes appearances by Hamid Drake, Don Byron, William Hooker, Joanna Duda, Picastro, Eucalyptus, Sam Newsome, and Joshua Abrams. Be there or be

Our friends (TONE) and alumnus (Nick Storring / Riparian Acoustics) have put together this beautiful event this week. Trust us you do NOT want to miss Beverly Glenn-Copeland! Opening is the loveliest Dustiny a delicious concoction led by Thom Gill!

For all of you that might've been Ratio buds back in the day, I'd like to say that you'd likely all dig this wonderful festival. If you're looking for a reason to visit Halifax this is a great one. In addition to some Ratio alums such as Brodie West and their recently announced Composer-In-Residence, Nicole Rampersaud their initial lineup has an unreal array of musicians spanning the gamut of exploratory sound. And that's not even all of it! Have a look and keep your ears perked for the next lineup announcement on March 5th!
