After 11 years of academic studies, the effectiveness of the electric toothbrush have been proven. The study researched the effectiveness of the powered toothbrushes in comparison to the manual one. Scientists at the University of Greifswald, Germany, have confirmed that powered toothbrush reduces gum disease, reduces loss of clinical attachment (i.e. gum to underlining bone and tooth), and increases tooth retention. However, power toothbrushes did not have an influence on caries (DFS) Decayed Filled Surface progression. Regular checkup and cleaning with the use of the electric-toothbrush remain one of the best prevention methods for the common oral problems. Avicenna (c. 980-1037) once said: Your diet is your medicine, your medicine is your food. In today’s rapid moving society, people are getting more and more concerned about what they eat and drink every day. We often read, see and hear about different dieting regimens. There are lots of TV programs about it as well. ... I recently come across one of them named the Ketogenic Diet (KD) and have received many questions about it. Recently, KD is getting more popular. The effect of KD on oral cavity tissues are not well known and need to be studied more in detail. This diet consists of very low carbohydrate and large amount of fat intake. It has been well studied and used for epileptic patients that do not respond by medication alone. Weight reduction during this diet is mostly contributed to the low carbohydrate intake. This factor may have a positive effect on the prevention of tooth decay. However, the nature of this diet is to increase ketone body and make urine acidic. I have not seen a well-documented study to show that this affects the PH of the oral cavity by disturbing its buffering action. If KD makes oral cavities more acidic then the process of tooth decay will accelerate and soon we will see that the erosion carries mostly at the cervical (neck) level of the teeth. The first sign and symptoms will be the chalky white colour change of the teeth, followed by cavitation and sensitivity. At the same time, most of the researchers advise for long term well-controlled study of KD on the healthy human for weight reduction purposes. There is not enough research to support the complete safety of this diet for the long term. If you are having a KD, stay alert about your oral health, well control and document your health parameters (lab and blood work) and be in touch with your family physician as always. Until then, maintain moderation, if you are not on KD.
