Is Swimming in a Chlorinated Pool Safe? Yes, as long as the pool is properly chlorinated. This means a chlorine level of between 1 part per million (ppm) and 3 ppm, with 3 ppm being ideal. However, if you’re sick, stay out of the pool. You shouldn’t be swimming; you should be resting.

Can the coronavirus spread through pools and hot tubs? Here is the answer, direct from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools and hot tubs. Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (e.g., with chlorine and bromine) of pools and hot tubs should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.... Please note the part that says, Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection Make sure your pool or hot tub is running properly, and that you’re using it the way it was intended to be used. Make sure you’re maintaining the equipment so it’s working the way it’s supposed to, and maintaining the pool or hot tub itself (i.e., cleaning it, etc.). Make sure you have the correct amount of sanitizer in the water. That is of the utmost importance.

HOW RAIN AFFECTS YOUR POOL WATER Rainwater is known to have acidic properties that can negatively affect your pool water chemistry balance. This can affect anyt...hing from the pH balance to alkalinity levels and more. The pH of rain across the US, which is all acid rain, is due to industrial gasses (i.e. NOx, SOx) which make nitric and sulfuric acid. Aside from rainwater falling directly into your pool being a bad thing, something even worse can happen. When you have rainwater coming off your landscape or deck, you now have an added source of water to deal with. When rainwater and ‘run off’ enter the pool, they can change your water’s pH, calcium hardness, total dissolved solids (TDS), alkalinity and other chemical levels as well as bring contaminants (e.g. debris, dirt) into the pool. Because rainwater is generally acidic (see map showing pH of rainwater across U.S), then your pool water can become corrosive and cause damage to the plaster and metal parts of your pool. The extent of the chemistry issues you’ll experience will depend on how much rain you get. A light rain, for example, should have very little affect on your pool water. Although, it is always best to be certain that your pool water chemistry is properly balanced at all times. See more

The Difference Between Pool Clarifier and Flocculant Cloudy pool water is usually caused by dead algae or mists of particles suspended in your pool water. The job of a coagulant agent, like clarifier or flocculant, is to clump these tiny particles into larger clumps so that they can be collected by your filter or flushed to waste. Now, clarifier and flocculant (floc and vac) are two sides of the same coin. Both are types of coagulant agents that accomplish the same task using different routes. The key differences are the time it takes for the reaction to take place and the extra elbow grease needed from you to finish the job.

Choose the Right Caulk for the Job The selection in the caulk aisle at home centers is mind-boggling, but actually choosing the right one is pretty simple. Most of the caulk on store shelves is basically one of four types: elastomeric, polyurethane, latex or silicone. Here’s how to make the right choice: Siding, windows and doors: Polyurethane is best. It’s paintable. It doesn’t shrink. It stays flexible. It adheres better than silicone, and it doesn’t attract dust and dirt t...he way silicone does. Roofing: Use an elastomeric or rubberized product. This stuff won’t dry out in extreme conditions, and it sticks to everything. Interior trim: Use latex if you’re sealing gaps and nail holes in trim that’s going to be painted. It cleans up easily and dries fast. It’s also easy to tooland cheap. Kitchen and bath: This is where silicone products shine. Silicone tools well. It can be purchased with antimicrobial additives, and can be easily removed and replaced when it gets grungy. See more

BATHROOM MEASUREMENT GUIDE You might not have given much thought to how many inches there should be between a toilet and the adjacent wall, but you’ve certainly... noticed if there isn’t enough space. If you’ve ever experienced a too-low shower head or a vanity that’s too close to a toilet, you know what we mean. It’s no fun to have to hunch down to rinse your hair or strain to reach a towel. In a perfectly balanced bathroom, you probably won’t notice the height or proportion of things because they feel right. If you’re planning a renovation or just want to add a few improvements, keep these numbers in mind. By following these guidelines, towels will be easy to reach, drawers will have plenty of room to open and you’ll have light in all the right places. Placing towel and grab bars at just the right height is a critical element of universal design, which is all about designing spaces for the people who use them. Products are available that can be used for assistance when standing or sitting. Décor Assist towel bars, corner shelves and toilet paper holders come in many styles and finishes, so they blend well with any fixtures you choose.

Don't sit on this toilet! This is all too common. The carpenters carelessly placed a floor joist directly under a toilet that's clearly marked on the house plans. And then a plumber goes nuts with a reciprocating saw. If you have manufactured I-joists, never, ever cut the top or bottom flanges!

Transitions to Other Types of Pipe If you're adding a guest bath or finally getting to that laundry tub you've been promising for the past five years, you'll have to join PEX to the existing system. Make sure you shut off the main water supply, then drain the lines. Use the special transition fittings shown to transition from copper, CPVC or steel. Solder, glue or thread on the transition fitting, then crimp PEX line on the barbed fitting. Note: Plumbing codes vary on allowing brass/steel connections. If they're allowed, be sure to apply liberal amounts of both Teflon tape and pipe joint compound to prevent reaction between the two metals.
