RIP little Petunia.
I suspect that I will be dispersing both my goats and the majority of my sheep this year. Not entirely decided, but if there is someone out there who is interested in either flock, feel free to touch base. These girls are like pets to me so it is imperative they go where they will be appreciated should it come to that.
All of our 2022 lambs have been spoken for except one very handsome ram lamb.
Pumpkin’s kids born late yesterday (4/28/22).
Pumpkin had a set of twins tonight, finally. Only a month and a half behind everyone else. A doeling and a buckling. No photos as it was dark and she had them in the only pen with no bedding so they were covered in dirt. Pics this weekend.
Lovely. In my inbox this morning: Notification of proximity to Suspect Premises for Avian Influenza Inbox / AFF EOC Communications 1 AFF:EX The BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food (the ministry) is reaching out to you as you are located within 12km of a Suspect Premises for the Avian Influenza (AI) virus. ...
Not sure how many of our fb page followers are following the news on High Pathogenic Avian Influenza, but this is a little too close to home so we've taken steps to ensure all our outdoor pens are covered and our normally free ranging layer flock is locked in the barn with our breeding stock until risk has dissipated. No need to panic, just use common sense. Here are a few tips: - Cover your pens (with tarps or shade cloth) to prevent overhead droppings or access by wild bird...s of any sort - Don't bring in birds willy-nilly from unknown sources, and avoid co-mingling areas such as swaps or sales - Temporarily stop filling bird feeders/baths - don't worry, the birds will find food - Keep poultry indoors where possible - Always wear clean shoes/clothes off your property, and have designated footwear for accessing your chicken pens/barns; use a foot bath (bleach/water in a shallow pan) that you can clean shoes off before entering/exiting your poultry pens - know the behaviour of your birds so you can spot deviations immediately and monitor carefully - report any unusual deaths or die offs immediately and place your farm under self-quarantine - register free for a PID (Premise ID) so that you can be notified of instances near you - staying informed is one of the best methods of protection - create an inventory of your birds - include ages/breeds/quantities in the event that something happens to your flock Unfortunately, HPAI is a real thing - so for the sake of all your poultry loving friends, please take this seriously and protect your flock, and in so doing help protect theirs!
