Yesterday, members of Operation IMPACT held a commemoration led by the Air Detachment IMPACT (AD-I), at Camp Canada, Kuwait in recognition of the 80th anniver...sary of the Battle of Britain. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) recognizes the Battle of Britain on the third Sunday of every September and considers it the second most important day in recognition next to Remembrance Day. The significance is deemed so important because, throughout the battle which lasted from July 10, 1940, to October 31, 1940, Canadians lost 23 of their brave pilots. The victory, however, allowed the allied forces to maintain a foothold in Europe which ultimately allowed the allies to liberate Europe. The battle also put the RCAF on to the world stage by showing their trustworthiness and their contributions in the Second World War. The Battle of Britain continues to serve as an example of how modern-day RCAF operations still function. Fearless pilots win air superiority through the combined effort of persistent maintainers to keep the aircraft in the sky, dedicated logistical and support trades who maintain the fighting force, skilled intelligence operators who constantly provide the pilots with knowledge, and aerospace control officers and radar operators who control and monitor the aircraft movements Major Keefe, Commander of AD-I. Operation IMPACT would like to recognize all of our members who participated in this years Canada Army Run Shadow Run which took place between 12-20 Septembe...r. Participation in the annual Canada Army Run raises awareness and funds for Support our Troops and Soldier On which offers assistance to wounded and ill Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and their families. Beginning in 2008, the Canadian Army Run has taken place every year in Ottawa and Gatineau. The Shadow Army Run is an opportunity for CAF members to participate in the run while on their deployments far from home. Participants on Op IMPACT ran in many Middle East countries including Kuwait, Lebanon and Jordan, and some even had the opportunity to run with service members from our various allied armed forces. This year, Op IMPACT had a total of 151 members registered from across the joint operations area who ran up to half marathons in the Middle Eastern heat. Participants from Op IMPACT generously raised nearly $3300 dollars and the top individual fundraiser raised over $1,100! Thank you again! You proved to Canadians and to yourselves that no matter where in the world we are deployed, and no matter the circumstances we find ourselves in, we will overcome and show that we are always in it together. Operation IMPACT members deployed at Ali Al Salem Air Base, Kuwait, took a moment earlier today to pause and reflect on the tragic events of September 11, 2001.... 19 years later, we still remember what happened on that day and how it changed our lives forever. Today we think about all the suffering that resulted from this terrorist attack 19 years ago, but also about the fact that there is still good in this world, and we reassure one another that we will never forget. We remember how we felt that tragic day, how vulnerable we felt but also how that day brought us all together. This morning we sounded a bell to pay tribute to those who lost their lives and to remember the heroism demonstrated by the first responders, especially members of New York Fire Department and the New York Police Department, as they rushed into the World Trade Center buildings despite everything happening around them. On September 11, 2001, 2977 people lost their lives and many more were injured. Lest we forget. #OpIMPACT #RockSolid #September11 #WeRememberYou

Our Honorary National President, Lieutenant-General (Ret) André Deschamps, and Vice-Chairman of the National Executive Council Colonel (Ret) Terry Chester, have... the most unenviable task of conveying the following very unfortunate news shared by the family: To all members of the RCAF Association. It is with heavy hearts that we must pass on the news that our National President Steve MacDonnell passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 30, 2020. When the family have made their final arrangements, this information will be passed on to all. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Jane and his two daughters, Heather and Alyssa at this sad time. Respectfully and sadly, André Deschamps and Terry Chester Stephen Macdonnell, pictured here, has been serving as the National President of the RCAF Association and Chairman of the National Executive Council since October 2016. He had previously served on the National Executive Council circa 2009 as Alberta Group President. More recently, he was presented with a Lifetime Membership (Honorary) in recognition of his extraordinary commitment and service to the RCAF Association within the Calgary community, the province and region of Alberta as well as nation-wide, at the highest levels of the RCAF Association.

Two young Canadian Engineers, J.A.D. McCurdy (is third from the left) and F.W. Baldwin (is second from the right), piloted the first military demonstration of a...ircraft flight in Canada at Camp Petawawa, Ontario. Conducted in July-August 1909 using the Silver Dart and the Baddeck 1, these were the first such flights in the British Commonwealth by a member of the British Commonwealth. On 1 July 1909 Baldwin and McCurdy arrived in Petawawa and proceeded to assemble the Silver Dart and Baddeck I. No 8 Engineer Services and Works Company at Camp Petawawa supported these early demonstration flights. An aircraft hangar was constructed by the Royal Canadian Engineers and they also prepared the temporary airstrip and provided the ground crew. According the Ottawa Citizen, a hanger constructed by the Royal Canadian Engineers, and the first built in Canada, was almost ready by 2 July 1909 and the assembly of the Silver Dart was proceeding. The aerodrome was equipped with a Curtiss 50 h.p., 8 cylinder water cooled engine. It is interesting to note that the Dart was to be used for testing the engine, while Baddeck I was to be used for the official trials. Baddeck I was quickly assembled with the assistance of soldiers of the Royal Canadian Engineers. It was expected that the aerodrome would gain a high speed of 50 mph. Amongst the dignitaries gathering for the trials was Colonel Fiset, Deputy Minister of Militia; Colonel Rutherford, Master of Ordnance; General MacDonald, Quartermaster General; Colonel Mackie; General Otter, Chief of General Staff, and Major Maunsell, Director General of Engineering. After days of false starts and high winds, frustration amongst the media and onlookers was growing. Newspapers regaled their readers with stories of poor treatment by the military. Finally, on 12 August, Baddeck I flew, but only for 100 feet.

DUTCH FAMILY REMEMBERS CREW OF DK 180. When 18 year-old Dutch girl, Lisa de Rooij, heard from her 90 year-old grandmother Romkje de Rooij-Piersma that on the ni...ght after her grandmothers 13th birthday a Canadian airman from a shot-down bomber had parachuted into their back garden, she wanted to find out more. That airman was Sgt Clarence Ray Munson one of the Air Gunners in P/O Gagnon's crew on Dk 180 - the same aircraft on which Sgt Chuck Page was the bomb-aimer (see previous series of posts). Lisa, found out much more from her grandmother, newspaper articles and more as well from from our web-site and recently posted items on our facebook page. Some of these discoveries will be the subject of subsequent posts. However, when Lisa perused some of the operations record books in which much 427 flight information is recorded , she noted that Ray Munson and P/O Gagnon were scheduled together on every flight but one (and the same for Chuck Page). She says that based on their many flights together, they likely had become good friends so she was very sad to find out that P/O Gagnon had passed away after being shot down that same night. Last month, after finding out that P/O Gagnon was buried at Bergen General Cemetery she took it upon herself to visit his grave. She reports that there is a special place in this cemetery where all the WWII military personnel who died in the area are buried, and that with a little help from one of the caretakers, she was able to find P/O Gagnon's grave. She took the attached photo of his headstone, and noted that other 427 Squadron aircrew are buried nearby including F/L K Webster, Sgt C Sampson, F/S D Northcoat (RNZAF) F/S G Tucker, P/P E Strang and P/O A Humphreys. These aircrew were all part of a 14 Halifax mission from Leeming to Mulheim three days previous, departing on 22 and set to return on 23 June 1943. Lisa's visit to P/O Gagnons grave is just one further example of how the Dutch continue to honour and remember those Canadians who helped in the eventual liberation of Holland, and particularly those who lost their lives. They will remember and so will we, thanks Lisa. PS Lisa also commented after reading the entries below on Chuck Page the following "I found it really nice to read about how Chuck Page is doing now and I am really pleased to hear that he is still so full of life and enjoying everything. I must say that I find him a real inspiration, trying to reach 100 laps before turning 100 himself". She also found the mini-documentary in which Chuck tells his story 'very impressive'. We concur and again thanks to Chuck inspiring later generations. PPS Recent photos of P/O Gagnon's headstone, and Lisa of her grandmother Romkje attached
