The MLC Research Centre is excited to invite you to celebrate the release of Irene Gammel’s I Can Only Paint: The Story of Battlefield Artist Mary Riter Hamilton (MQUP), a major 400-page study of Hamilton’s vast, underexplored body of war work featuring rare photographs, paintings and letters, and a compelling examination of how art can navigate through grief, loss, and empathy. The online event takes place on Thursday, December 10, 5-6 PM EST and will include an author talk ...that details Gammel’s journey of researching and writing the book, followed by audience Q&A, and a book giveaway. The event also includes remarks by international authors and scholars Catherine Speck (Australia), Dominiek Dendooven (Ypres, Belgium), Marguerite Helmers (Wisconsin-Oshkosh), Sarah McKinnon (Halifax), and McGill-Queen’s Editor-in-chief Jonathan Crago. I take the liberty of attaching an Evite and flyer for the book. RSVP: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/i-can-only-paint-by-irene-gamme Email: [email protected]

Black Indigenous Alliances: Reconfiguring Education for Otherwise Futures Tuesday, 1 December 2020 | 7-9 pm EST The Faculty of Education’s Anti-Black Racism Committee (ABRC) invites you to this webinar, where panelists will create a space of inquiry and engagement through dialogue as they consider questions such as: How might we think about education as a site that cultivates conditions for structural transformation and not just a place for the socialization and encul...turation of young people? What historical alliances can we take up in order to enact these changes? Why and how could Black and Indigenous Peoples and their allies challenge systemic racist practices and institutions? How do or do not these challenges differ pedagogically from the ‘multicultural’ ethos that dominates teaching and learning? With this webinar the ABRC wishes to create a space for dialogical and listening practices that can be difficult. These are generative and necessary as imagining Otherwise Futures means undoing white supremacy and its ontological-epistemological logics.
