English Vocabulary Last night the #rciisconversationclub discussed our food guilty pleasures. A guilty pleasure is something you know isn’t good for you, but you still enjoy it. It is often used about unhealthy but delicious food, or some form of art or media that is not highly regarded or considered good quality (for example, trashy reality tv shows, rom-coms, or romance novels). It could also refer to an unhealthy activity you enjoy such as binge-watching your f...avourite online series, following celebrity gossip, or ordering take-out. What’s your guilty pleasure? For this #FBF, we have a picture of our teacher Paulo’s first full-time English class (although not at RCIIS) back in 1998! RCIIS has very experienced English teachers who have taught for years in Canada and around the world! Our teachers also have a variety of work and life experiences within academia, business, the performing arts, as well as other fields! We love to share our rich experiences and diverse knowledge and skills with our students. ... There is a disparaging English proverb about teachers - Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach. But at RCIIS we teach AND do! The RCIIS motto is Learning By Doing, and we don’t just talk the talk - we walk the walk! (If someone talks the talk but DOESN’T walk the walk, it means that their words don’t match their actions). Happy International Coffee Day! A delicious cup of coffee is one of those simple, little joys you can really appreciate nowadays! Although Canada is not known for producing coffee, Canadians certainly enjoy consuming it in large quantities! Canada is ranked 10th in the world for most coffee consumption per capita (the U.S. is 26th and the U.K. is 45th). ... When people think of coffee and Canada, they usually think of Tim Hortons, which is a restaurant chain that is named after, and was created by, a legendary hockey player from Ontario. If you order a coffee in Canada, you will sometimes be asked: What do you take in it? or How do you take it? This means, Do you want milk, cream, or sugar? One common coffee order at Tim Hortons is a double double - this means a coffee with 2 servings of cream and 2 teaspoons of sugar. If you are in Toronto, we recommend you try Balzac’s Coffee (lovely atmosphere and delicious coffee), Boxcar Social (hip atmosphere and alcohol as well), and Snakes and Lattes (a board game cafe)! We hope that you enjoy a delicious cup of coffee (or two or three) today! . . . . #rciis #canada #lifeincanada #studyabroadcanada #learnenglishonline #canadaculture #studyvisacanada #workvisacanada #canadavisa #visitorvisacanada #englishincanada @rciis_turkey @rciis_japan @rciis_brazil @rciis_korea @rciis_latinos

It helps me to shift my mind from work to life. 5) What do you like the most about Canada? What I like the most about Canada is that Canada is one of the most multicultural countries. Covid-19 Update Ontario is now in the second wave of Covid-19 and it is forecast to peak in October. Government and individual actions will be crucial over the coming weeks. In the words of Toronto’s medical officer of health, Dr. Eileen de Villa, This is not the time to panic. It is the time to act. 2 Yesterday, Ontario had its highest number of new Covid-19 cases (700), and 381 were in Toronto. It’s plain to see that there is an immediate, rising ris...k in Toronto of continued and significant Covid-19 resurgence said Dr. De Villa. Over the past few weeks, the local spread of Covid-19 has been linked to locations like private parties, a diverse range of workplaces, weddings, and religious services. Toronto’s city council will meet tomorrow and Dr. De Villa will recommend several new restaurant rules such as limiting the number of patrons at one table to 6 (from 10), and the extension of several city by-laws to 2021 involving mandatory masks and other safety measures. De Villa also says that the concept of a 10-person bubble, or social circle, no longer works for Toronto’s current circumstances. It is now recommended that Torontonians limit their bubble to only their household again. Toronto Mayor, John Tory, says: We’re asking Toronto residents to recognize that the alarm bell is ringing and to take action in their own lives that will help us to stop the spread of Covid-19 and flatten the curve again. Whether you are in Toronto with us, or elsewhere, we strongly wish that our entire #rciisfamily is staying safe! We’d like to introduce you to our staff member, Daniel! We asked Daniel a few questions about himself: 1) When did you start working with RCIIS? May 2019... 2) What do you do at RCIIS? I am the Marketing Sales and Recruitment Manager for Latin America and Europe 3) What do you love about working at RCIIS? I love working in a very open atmosphere, where I can meet with my students and treat them as friends instead of students. I usually sympathize with them and this makes the difference when they start trusting me in their future path in Canada. 4) What has been interesting about transitioning to working online? I think that working online is the new era for all of us. I am a people person, and I really like the interaction with my agents and partners; however, I think we are all somewhat enjoying this new challenge. 5) What are some of your interests/hobbies? Pre-pandemic, I used to go to the gym everyday, focusing on the idea of a healthy life. Now that we are in a pandemic, I started doing yoga and eating healthier food. I also like photography and making videos. 6) What do you like the most about Canada? I love Canada the way it is. I remember the first day I arrived in the airport, my legs were shaking and the only thing I could think was What am I doing here alone? But after a few days I fell in love with the culture, festivals, parks, food, and markets. I believe that Canada is the best country in the world to live. 7) What is your favourite English word, and why? My favourite English word is however. It took me many years to get used to using it. It is such an easy word to use to connect ideas and sentences, but it was the most difficult word to put into my day-to-day conversations. Thanks, Daniel! RCIIS NEWS The new Toronto sign has been officially unveiled at Nathan Phillips Square (in front of city hall)! The previous sign was created for the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, so this new version has been designed to be more durable. The vinyl decorative wrap around the edges of the letters was designed by Toronto artist Danilo McCallum. ... The new design recognizes the International Decade for People of African Descent which was introduced by the United Nations General Assembly. Toronto mayor John Tory hopes that this new sign brings some joy to Torontonians, but more importantly, that it sends a strong message that Toronto is committed to ending anti-Black racism through systemic changes. A Toronto tourism survey found that the Toronto sign was in the top three most visited attractions in the city and has been consistently ranked as one of the most Instagram-worthy spots. We’d like to introduce you to our teacher, Lesley! We asked Lesley a few questions about herself: 1) When did you start working with RCIIS?... May 2016 2) What do you do at RCIIS? I currently teach Afternoon Speaking 2 and contribute social media content (like this!) 3) What do you love about working at RCIIS? I LOVE meeting international students! Learning about people from so many cultures and striving to help them with their English and life goals is such wonderfully fulfilling work. I love the freedom RCIIS allows me to be creative in my lessons and field trips in Toronto! 4) What has been interesting about transitioning to working online? I am so grateful to have been able to continue connecting with international students throughout this pandemic! I’m in awe of technology and how I can meet and teach students every day who are currently in Turkey, Ecuador, Mexico, South Korea, Brazil, etc. I love that we can easily share our screens and show each other pictures of what we are describing (exotic food, animals, places, etc). I also love using my virtual whiteboard on Zoom to efficiently demonstrate my corrections (and then save and send to students!) 5) What are some of your interests/hobbies? I like to think of myself as a Clark Kent type - by day, I teach, but after hours, I’m Superman! No, no, jokes jokes - I am an actor and comedian. I also enjoy painting, singing and playing musical instruments, writing, eating Korean and Japanese food, exploring Toronto’s hidden gems of nature and culture, and trying every craft IPA I can (and logging it into a beer app called Untappd - I’m a craft beer nerd).
