Being a coastal community, one readily thinks of the open ocean. However, Station 60 has a unique geography that we provide coverage and support to. The Estuary’ is a brackish delta fed by the many headwaters surrounding the valley which finally flows through the Courtenay river. Springtime runoffs brings high flow rates, large debris and high silt volumes from eroding riverbanks. All this emptying in to the delta and yet somewhere in there is a navigable channel to open w...ater. With the tides coming in one way and the river outflow from another, you can imagine this channel moves and changes its course over time. Station 60 trains on the river to make sure its members are aware of new hazards this ever-changing waterscape provides. Understanding this unique environment is vital for a safe response to any emergency up river. Sometimes navigation is as rudimentary as a crew member at the bow sighting depths or sounding with a boat hook. See more

Here's a little throw back montage presented by the New Crew class of 2018-2019. A fitting reminder of what we do, backed with holiday spirit through the eyes of new volunteers.

Station 60 Comox would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to, the 100+ Women Who Care Comox Valley. It is truly remarkable and inspiring to watch as this group of women from the Comox Valley rally together and support local charities. We are very fortunate to be the recipient of this gracious gift. Local chapter members Carol Daize, Lisa Wilcox, Diane Kenney, Kathy Pilon, Mandy Baker presented a cheque to Dave Mellin, President of the Comox Marine Rescue Society and Roch... Massicotte, Station Leader of RCM-SAR Station #60. An unusually low pressure weather system has its eye fixed squarely on Vancouver Island starting early tomorrow morning. Hurricane force winds are predicted for the North-West Island. Strathcona Regional District's Protective Services Coordinator warns us that; Everybody is going to be in the wind warning criteria zone. ... Early morning 7am-ish is when the front will reach the island and southwest will push behind it and that will be our peak wind moment with gusts of 110-120km per hour and they will be close to populated zones. The power outage potential is high. As far as precipitation is concerned, we could see values above 10mm per hour in high west locations (Tahsis, Zeballos). 120mm is likely the top end amount for those highest locations. Storm is moving south to north so the precipitation won’t be sticking around one area for too long. The storm will taper off Tuesday afternoon. Freezing levels will shift up from what they are currently are, we could see up to 2500m tomorrow and lasting 24 hours (or less). Then shifting slowly back down to 1200-1500m level. Today there is a high likelihood of seeing 2-5cm quick accumulation in north Campbell River, Gold River, Port Alberni (higher elevations). Lowest amount of predicted rain is 60mm and the highest is 100mm. The snow reaching as far down as sea level is unlikely (nothing accumulating).
