It’s dry out there folks, and fires can start very quickly! Jaffray Fire Department responded to a grass fire this afternoon that was started by a spark from a grinder. Quick actions by the homeowner and the fire department prevented it from spreading into near by structures.

Today the RDEK Elk Valley South Country Fire Services has sent a Structural Protection Crew to work on structural protection at the Doctor Creek fire near Canal Flats. Our team of 5 is made up of members from the Jaffray, Baynes Lake, Elko, Hosmer , and Fernie Fire Departments. Our team building efforts through training and incident response enable us to send a very effective crew without leaving any one community short on firefighters. This training weekend gives our new recruits a basic orientation to our Fire Departments, and some basic skills training to get you started. Whomever decided that it was a good idea to light this car on fire at the Tie Lake Transfer Station, has no idea of the potential this had to be a catastrophic wildfire! If this fire had spread to the wildland there could have been lives, homes, and businesses lost; all due to your reckless and ignorant behaviour. Our area has been at EXTREME fire hazard for weeks! Your actions put the entire community of Jaffray at peril! If anybody has information regarding the lighting of this fire please contact us immediately.

Tonight, firefighters from multiple fire departments will be conducting a training exercise in the Rosen Lake area. Be aware of fire truck traffic on McLean Rd and Rosen Lake Rd East.

Hi Folks, lightning strikes can smoulder for days until they are detected, we all need to be vigilant out there and watch for smoke. This past Sunday the Baynes Lake firefighters responded to a small fire that was most likely caused by a lightning strike from a week ago! If you see signs of a wildfire, report it to 1-800-663-5555 (by landline) or *5555 (by cell).

***Update*** Highway is clear and regular traffic is flowing. Jaffray FD is on scene of a power pole fire on Highway 3/93 near Betania Rd. Traffic is currently single lane alternating down Betania Rd.
