I’ve known every single one of these children since they were in mamas belly/babies/toddlers/pre schoolers. Everyone has their time & today each of these beautiful kiddos are moving up, & moving on. From first loose teeth, to first black eyes, to first day of kindergarten & first school dances, I’ve been there to support them or I’ve watching them from the sidelines. Each of these kids have touched very special places in my heart & I will forever be grateful for having been able to spend such a long time with them. Wether they are starting a different school, moving on or aging out I will love them forever! You’ll move mountains kid! - Monica

What a summer it’s been! - Monica

Last weekend, Tracey, Tracy, Monica and I were fortunate to be able to attend a conference, in Halifax, hosted by the Halifax Chapter of Autism Awareness Centre Inc. The two day's presentations were phenomenal, with Dr. Ruth Aspy presenting, "Positive Strategies for Supporting Self-Regulation", and Carol Burmeister, MA, presenting "Strengthen Executive Function Skills to Decrease Negative Behaviors and Build Positive Behaviors". Both were very informative, relevant and offere...d a lot of practical, easily implemented ideas, techniques, and strategies that we will implement on a daily basis, with all of the children in our lives. All children grow and progress, at varying rates, in the stages of developing self-regulation and executive function skills (i.e. the brain functions that allow us to plan, organize, pay attention, understand different points of view, regulate our emotions, start and focus on tasks, etc.). While children with autism spectrum disorders, ADHD and/or learning disabilities, all experience difficulty in executive function, many, many other children do, as well. We see it, every day, in the senior pre-school room, for instance, when a four year old loses control and hits her "best friend" because he "wasn't following her rules". Impulse control is part of inhibitory control - an executive function. Some children experience challenges in executive function, without ever having symptoms of any other disability or disorder and research is still looking at why that is. The good news is that there are ways that we, as parents, as educators, as friends and important people in the lives of children, can all play a role in helping children to develop these skills. Tracey, Tracy, Monica and I will be sharing our new found knowledge on these topics, with all of our co-educators at Reaching for Rainbows. If you have a question about self-regulation and/or executive function, please let us know. We certainly aren't experts on these topics, but we have gained some knowledge and many resources, on these topics and would love to help you find the answers you're looking for. See more

March Break Madness

A group of our educators participated in training, last weekend, to better understand and respond to children who have difficulty with self-regulation and/or anxiety, etc. and the, sometimes, resulting challenging behavior. Troy Best gave a great presentation that rejuvenated, recharged and renewed our energy to respond with compassion, empathy and a renewed understanding. Thanks, on behalf of the children who will benefit, to all who attended! In anticipation of the weather getting significantly worse, within a short period of time, we have decided to delay opening until 12:00. We apologize, in advance, for any inconvenience this may cause; however, with concerns of opening and having to close in the middle of the storm, we've decided it would be prudent to delay until we see what the weather will do. Good morning everyone, Just a quick note of caution; Diane has just salted the walkway, after climbing over the snowbank to avoid walking on the sheet of ice that coated the little hill on the walkway. She also said they've just salted the hill on Biggs Drive, as well, so please drive slow on your way to the centre and/or work, this morning. We are open, as usual but it might be a good idea to wear your skates and leave the car at home... Drive safe! Don't let this be you
