When a domestic rabbit is dumped outside, not only are there predators to worry about (including domestic cats, but that's another rant), there are also cars, the weather, and here's something else to think about: You know those uh-oh moments when your rabbit eats something they aren't supposed to? Maybe it's a charging cord. Maybe it's the leaf of a house plant. If you're lucky, you've only felt the initial panic as you quickly Google "what happens when my rabbit eats ____?..." and monitored your baby until they seem to be fine. In our house, we've watched tragedy strike because of a freak accident with an ethernet cord. We maybe came close to also losing Marshall because he ate a few ivy leaves off a shelf when we looked away for just a moment. Yesterday in the "safety" of our yard I realized that as he went happily hopping for our tomato plant that he wasn't so safe after all. Tomato leaves are toxic to rabbits. Wild rabbits know this inherently, but our house bunnies do not. We took them from nature to make them ours. We do not get to "take them back". Rabbits are delicate, delicate creatures who face exponential dangers when left on their own. Own your responsibility to be stewards to the animals of this planet. Do the right thing. If the old "proverb" is correct that when you die you are met by all the animals that came in to your care in your life and you are judged by them... How do you see this going down?

1 year ago we brought home a very sick sack of bones who stunk like neglect. They called him a "meat rabbit" but he had no meat on his body. Fighting with parasites that were equally bad to us humans. --> Did I mention that someone was supposed to Eat this rabbit?? Despite never having been shown love and affection, he knew what it was he wanted to express. Without fear, he gives it to everyone he meets. The world was cruel to him but he meets it head on with abandonment and ...carefree silliness. Because of him we strive to be a Vegan household. Because of him we want to reach out and help others. Because of him we have increased awareness and understanding. Because of him, my heart is full. From hell he was rescued, from heaven he was sent. I love you, Marshall.
