Public school in Manitoba: Our staff will collaborate to prepare and use a variety of activities to ensure French sounds are taught at appropriate grade levels to help develop confidence and fluency in French reading. Part of our school team attended the Orton-Gillingham conference and this approach is being used in the lower grades. Our grade 1 team will also be attending an Orton-Gillingham conference in the Spring. https://www.lrsd.net//%C3%89cole-Provencher-2019-20-School

We have a good grasp of what they need to know, but do not yet have a solid grasp on how to ensure they come to know it. Here, we discuss three critical issues for future research to address.https://www.aft.org/ae/winter2020-2021/vaughn_fletcher_sb2

I often get requests from parents and educators about schools and school divisions using evidence based approaches such as Orton Gillingham. Systematic synthetic phonics. Multi-sensory learning and reading sciences. Please add a school or district that you know that has been investing in teacher training for effective evidence based approaches

Is This the End of ‘Three Cueing’? The strategywhich is also known as three-cueing, or MSVinvolves prompting students to draw on context and sentence structure, along with letters, to identify words. But it isn’t the most effective way for beginning readers to learn how to decode printed text. .https://www.edweek.org//is-this-the-end-of-three-/2020/12

Q: When in the instructional sequence should a teacher ask a reader, "Does that make sense?" A: After the words have been decoded. Relying on context (pictures, syntax, etc.) rather than decoding results in a guessing game that students can't win. https://www.buzzsprout.com//6201088-s2-05-the-right-to-rea

The Arkansas Division of Secondary and Elementary Education announced in October 2019 that any curriculum that utilizes cueing strategies won’t be approved for use in the state, meaning that Calkins’ materials and another popular program, Fountas and Pinnell Classroom, are effectively banned. Colorado released a list of approved core reading curriculum, and Calkins’ programs weren’t on the list. A group outside St. Louis sent a letter signed by 216 parents, students and taxpa...yers to the school board asking that Calkins, and Fountas and Pinnell be dropped. The Oakland Unified School District, whose use of Calkins’ products was highlighted in the 2019 APM Reports story, announced it was forming a committee to consider adopting new curriculum. And Student Achievement Partners, a nonprofit consulting group, published a review that concluded Calkins’ curriculum materials are unlikely to lead to literacy success for all of America’s public schoolchildren. https://www.apmreports.org//influential-literacy-expert-lu

This is an essential documentary to view - let's work with our parents. They are advocating for their children and are trying to support us educators. Please note - the formal complaint directly named specific whole language programs - please watch to find out which ones... In 2010, a group of parents in a suburban school district near Columbus, Ohio discovered their children had something in common they could not read. They were languishing in a reading intervention progra...m and their dyslexia was not being identified or remediated as is required by federal law under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The group banded together to form the grassroots organization, Upper Arlington Kids Identified with Dyslexia (UA-KID). Together they filed a systemic, group complaint with the Ohio Department of Education and the district was found in violation on all three allegations. Then, they formed a partnership with the district and now work shoulder to shoulder to deliver the nationally recognized early literacy program they built together. This film was made to offer a roadmap for parents to advocate on behalf of all children. https://ourdyslexicchildren.com/ See more

The Academy has deep roots. It was established by its Founding Fellows, who were either trained directly by Dr. Samuel Orton, Anna Gillingham, Bessie Stillman, June Lyday Orton, Paula Rome or other individuals trained by the previously mentioned individuals. The Academy certifies people to use the Orton-Gillingham Approach with students of any agepre-k through adult. We do not follow a set scope and sequence. What is important is that the teacher/tutor understand how to use... and implement the OG teaching techniques and procedures. It involves how to teach/remediate all areas of literacy, not just reading and spelling and to provide this instruction one-on-one, in a classroom, or with any size group. We provide not only the knowledge-base with our coursework but also the practical experience and support learning how to apply the knowledge-base. https://www.ortonacademy.org/o/what-makes-aogpe-different/ See more

Join Margaret Goldberg and Alanna Mednick from the Right to Read Project as they address the science of reading and its translation into easy practice for educators. They break down the Seidenberg and McClelland Four-Part Processing Model and explain how it relates to the simple view of reading. They also reflect on how educators should approach reading as scientists and be ready to teach in a way that may be uncomfortable for a timethe labor of love stage of literacy inst...ruction. Quotes: We should anticipate reading difficulties and we should be prepared to be able to address them. Margaret Goldberg We need to go at the pace of the child and we can’t leave anything up to chance. This is well worth the watch - it exemplifies why we must stop teaching emergent or struggling readers with repetitive patterned texts and how parents have been seeing this first-hand during COVID, therefore innocently questioning the entire instructional process of whole language. Want to see your city? We’ve put together a lighting request letter template that you can use to request your local library, city hall, or school to light up red. Be sure to share your success with us so Dyslexia Canada can highlight their participation. Sample Request Letter To whom it may concern. I am a resident of [insert city] and would like to request the [insert name of city, province, or entity] support in raising awareness around dyslexia this October.... Imagine trying to manage everyday life with a disability that makes it difficult to read, write or spell. This is the reality that 15-20% of Canadians who live with dyslexia face. Dyslexia is a hereditary, lifelong condition that only with proper identification and specific instruction, can be managed and children can thrive along with their peers. For the many kids struggling with dyslexia, the teacher's red pen is a constant reminder of the lack of awareness and support needed for them to actually learn to read, write and spell with their peers and be successful in school and in life. In recognition of International Dyslexia Awareness month, Dyslexia Canada is asking cities across Canada to light up their City Hall or other available buildings in red for one day during their third annual campaign "Mark it Read for Dyslexia". You can find more information about the Mark it Read initiative, and about the campaign and a complete listing of all of the participating cities on their website at https://www.dyslexiacanada.org/mark-it-read. I would love to be able to say that my city participated this year. This October, please consider my request to light up [insert city] City Hall or any other capable building in Red for one day during October 2020 to bring awareness and shine a light on the kids in our classrooms who need our help. I hope you would help spread the message through your social media accounts. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your support this October! Honestly, it feels like we’ve being saying this over and over and over again. But it also feels like moms are the only ones saying it. No one else is hearing it.... We feel the push pull daily. Literally failing, dropping, not finishing what we’ve started. Everything has been impacted. But mostly ourselves. As we try and keep every child afloat barely, stepping sideways from everything else including our careers. But there’s no option. Literally there are no options. So to every mom out there, just know that we see you, we hear you and we are you. Via The Conscious Kid & instagram.com/catandnat
