Today I turn 44. People, especially women, are under such pressure to age gracefully, aka not looking old. We hesitate to say our age, subconsciously worried it somehow devalues us. When the best compliment we can get is that we don’t look our age, like there’s something wrong with getting older, it shows that we have a misplaced value on youth. While I don’t want to look older than my years, I am not ashamed to look my age. I have earned every line, every dark spot, ever...y silver strand. They tell me that I have been blessed to live as long as I have, and remind me to not take for granted the time I have left. To me, aging gracefully is accepting, even loving, the inevitable changes that the march of time brings our way. A friend told me today that we are getting better, not older.
