There are trillions of microbes that live within your gut. These microbes can be influenced by many different factors. Birth: The gut microbiome of a baby born via the birth canal will allow the baby to receive its first "dose" of bacteria from the mother. This bacteria will set the stage for their gut microbiome & can support the immune system.... Caesarean delivery results in fewer bacteria in the baby’s gut being like its mother’s. Infant Feeding: Infants who are breastfed will have a different gut microbiome vs. formula fed infants.Breast milk contains microbes from the mother’s gut that travel to the breast in preparation for populating the baby’s gut. For mothers who have had a c-section or formula fed their little ones need not to fret! There are many things we can do to support little one's gut health for the future. Age: As individuals age, so does the risk for various diseases and medications which can have an impact on the gut microbiome. As we age, the bile production tends to decrease. Bile is essential to emulsify fats for digestion and absorption. It can also have an impact on the balance and diversity of the microbes. When fat is not broken down properly, it can have a negative impact on our gut bacteria. Chronic Stress: There is a STRONG connection between the gut and the brain commonly referred to as the gut brain axis.
