Recycling Alternative's 1st Annual Holiday Drive has begun! Staff and volunteers at the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre are preparing special gift bags to give to 600 women and up to 100 children who come to the centre. With this in mind, they are looking for new and unopened gifts primarily for women. Are you wondering what kind of gifts the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre is looking for? It is Day 2 of Waste Reduction Week and today's theme is textiles! In the Greater Vancouver area alone 22,000 tonnes of apparel ends up in landfill every year so it is great to see organizations such as Leverage Lab working to prevent it from ending up there at all. It is one of our favourite times of the year at RA! Waste Reduction Week in Canada has officially kicked off and today’s theme is Circular Economy. Some good news from last weekthe motion ‘Improving the Circularity of Vancouver’s Economy’ was presented and passed at Vancouver’s City Council meeting. Louise Schwarz, owner and co-founder at RA was there among others speaking in support of this motion. This holiday season Recycling Alternative is partnering with the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre for our first annual Charity Holiday Drive. The Downtown Eastside Women's Centre's mission is to provide a safe, non-judgmental environment for women from all walks of life, who live and/or work in the Downtown Eastside. Using our network and trucks we'll be collecting donations (new and unopened) from customers across the Lower Mainland on behalf of the Downtown Eastside Women's... Centre (as well as from our own staff) and delivering them on December 11th. The Downtown Eastside Women's Centre is looking for a variety of gifts for women and toys for kids. The COVID-19 crisis has been at the forefront of everyone’s minds and impacted everyone’s lives significantly but there have also been some interesting side effects for the Earth. We have seen reduced pollution and GHG emissions all over the world!
