Red Deer ABC 2020

Randall Hasson will be teaching the 3 day class: Shape and Texture of Calligraphy. The goal of this course is to use the artist’s eye to identify the basic shapes, texture and characteristics of a specific style of lettering. With essential information about the construction of individual letters using calligraphic tools, this class will begin with the broad edged pen and work towards identifying the underlying shapes of individual letters. We are excited to announce the addition of Mike Gold to our instructor lineup for ABC2020! Mike has worked as a commercial lettering designer for over 30 years, mostly in the social expressions business. But his real passion is exploring the corridors of calligraphy that have been less traveled, the path where words and letters are design elements with which to play with line, shape and form, where creating a visual statement is more important than writing a readable text. In... both his professional and personal art, Mike breaks traditional rules to create contemporary, non-traditional work. We can’t wait to soak up some of Mike’s knowledge and passion for calligraphy! LAG member Roxanne Fairbrother says this Mike Gold is an easy going, super talented guy and a great instructor. He inspires and directs students to experiment and move beyond traditional and formal lettering styles to more contemporary and expressive scripts. I spent 5 days studying with Mike in 2012 at the Calligraphy Northwest conference in Portland. The class was fast-paced, non-threatening and full of fun and creativity. Randall is an artist, calligrapher, instructor and speaker who has appeared on the faculty of Arts, Lettering Arts, and Educational Conferences in the United States, Canada and England. He owned and operated The Randall M. Hasson Gallery from 2000 2013 in San Diego, CA and Santa Fe, NM. He has authored many articles and has lectured on a variety of Art and Lettering Art subjects.
