RED: The Island Story Book 05.05.2022

Happy Monday REDheads! You might recognize this picture from the front cover of RED volume 19 - John Somers in his workshop. The photo was sent to us by his son, Steven Somers, and was meant to accompany a "Story in the Song" feature that Steven had sent us, a song called "Working in the Woods with my Old Man." We liked the picture so much we decided to run it on the front cover. Since the launch of volume 19, waaaaay back in 2019, Steven has recorded an album titled Songs ...of St. Georges, which features the song "Working in the Woods with my Old Man." He recently sent us a copy of the song and we were excited to receive it and now happy to share it with you. Click on the link below. https://soundcloud.com/user-/3-workin-in-the-woods-with-my

Giveaway alert!! Howdy REDheads, this is not a RED announcement, but, it's on behalf of the founder of RED, David Weale, who has written a brand new memoir which has just been launched into the world. I could tell you about 'Poison in the Porridge' but, why not let esteemed Island historian, and friend of RED, say a few words: "The best stories are quests. In Poison in the Porridge, part meditation, part memoir, the most eloquent of our storytellers takes us on a journey in ...search of himself. His guide is the unflinching wisdom that only comes with living, and the world he travels, a world of wonders as well as woundings, is the Island that he has so vividly re-imagined over a lifetime as teacher and writer. The quest is by turns poignant, lyrical, painful, and profound. And it is always deeply compelling. For Weale's wise, watchful heart delicately balances beauty and anguish as he takes us on his pilgrim's progress towards self-knowing. It seems to me that the journey he describes is also our journey, and in his story we will glimpse our own." - Ed MacDonald. See, that's why we let Ed do the talking. We're giving away three signed copies of Poison in the Porridge. All you have to do is like and share this post for a chance to win. Poison in the Porridge is now in bookstores across the Island.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS INITIATIVE G'day REDheads, hope you're all doing well and are deeply immersed in the Christmas spirit, or at least dipping your toes in. It seems so. As I drove through rural PEI last night, I was amazed by the Christmas lights on display. It seems this year Islanders have decided to put a little extra effort into spreading joy, and it truly warmed the heart to drive through a dark country corridor of colorful lights, perhaps a small expression of persev...erance at the end of a difficult year. I've spoken with several local retailers who have said business is bustling, yet another sign of communal fortitude in the face of adversity, as it seems Islanders have really taken the "support local" mantra to heart. We live in one of the very best places in the world, and it's showing. We know that there are a lot of Islanders who will be missing home this Christmas, not able to make the joyful pilgrimage, and unable to reunite with family and friends. So, our HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS initiative is about sending a piece of the Island to those that can't be here. Let us know if someone like this comes to mind, and where they live, and we'll supply you with a couple of free RED back volumes that you can send their way. If they can't be home for the holidays, lets send them a piece of home for the holidays. Maybe some stories from home will warm the heart just a little bit, like all of those Christmas lights did for me. Send us a private message and we'll work out the details. Tally-ho REDheads.

RED: The Island Story Book 07.09.2020

COMING SOON!! RED volume 24!! G'day REDheads, the good folks at Kwik Kopy Design & Print Centre are putting volume 24 together as we speak and we hope to have it in stores by the weekend. Until then, we'd like to introduce you to another new face in the pages of RED. Ann Boyles, according to her RED bio, "was born and raised in Charlottetown, attended West Kent Elementary School, and once won a third-place ribbon in the school ice sports." ... In fact, her story in volume 24 is about a confrontation with a school mate during an ice sports dress up pageant at the old Charlottetown Forum. It's a comical little piece, and beautifully written I might add - an editor's dream. For each volume of RED we send our manuscript to a proof reader before we go to print and usually the stories come back plastered in pink and green highlighter - spelling and technical corrections that were overlooked. Ann's story didn't have a single stroke of highlighter through it, clean as a whistle it was. We hope you enjoy her story, and we hope to see more of Ann in future REDs.
