He was 18 when he enlisted. This was 1942 in front of his home in North Hatley, Quebec. A young man about to go to war at sea. My grandfather, Alfred Windle Bampton, was in the Royal Canadian Navy for 4.5 years. He traveled from Montreal to Halifax and then to Calgary for training. He was a Petty Officer in the engine room on board 3 ships, HMCS Camrose, HMCS Bowmanville, HMCS Malaspina. They were on convoy duty, sailing between Halifax and England and through the English Cha...nnel. Protecting the troops and supply ships across the Atlantic. 97,600 men served with the RCN during WWII. 7,122 women served. The RCN destroyed 33 enemy submarines during the war. They lost 22 warships and had over 2000 fatal casualties. My grandpa is 97 years old and still sharing his stories from sea. thank you for your service, your courage and your sacrifice
