To have a relationship with nature is a blessing, but also a necessity... even if you don't yet know how to hear it. When we speak about basking in the love of nature, the essence of the wild, or ideas like "the earth reaches up through the soil to gift us personalized food and medicine," many take this as a metaphorical concept. That is a valid experience, but I mean it in a very literal sense. Nature is not just a diffuse energy, but to many a very real entity. This is a mu...lti-faceted friend, a parent and guardian, a guide and challenging teacher. Though sometimes the lessons can be painful (a wasp sting is not exactly fun), the compassion is unconditional and endless. Invigorating, inspiring, enticing... and the softest shoulder to cry on. Speaking profound wisdom in its perfect time, but also encouraging playfulness and folly. For how else can you learn if you don't tumble now and then? And when you open fully to the love of the land, the land loves you back. As you make an effort to learn its language, it will learn yours in turn, and speak - on the day I took this photo, basking in the bliss and freedom of the Spirit of the Wild, I found hearts everywhere. This is one - not symmetrical, but perfect, with character and joy - made my own heart burst with joy. May you rest in the love of the earth, and feel its overwhelming adoration for you. (Also, I will have some exciting news soon, and you'll get to see where I've spent all my time the last almost 3 years!!)

This is completely devastating! Please read this. Please email the sample email below to... [email protected] Please share share share! Sample letter provided by @elvisstanaccount We are writing to express our concern about the proposed Pest Management Plan (PMP) on, Stó:l, St’át’imc, Nlaka'pamux, Squamish, and Tsleil Waututh territories by BC Timber Sales (file 18597-40/2022-27 PMP). The proposal outlines a plan involving the aerial and ground spraying of chemicals, including glyphosate, triclopyr and Formula 40 to kill native plant species in forest areas from Squamish to Hope, including areas near Chilliwack, Mission, and Agassiz. We are deeply concerned about the lack of time to provide public input, especially given the potential impacts of pesticides and the lengthy proposed duration of 5 years. We ask that you extend the deadline for at least another 60 days beyond the current deadline of March 27, 2022. We also ask that you issue a new statement advertising the opportunity for members of the public to provide feedback and post it widely across multiple platforms including online platforms. The initial posting, which we saw only in the Hope Standard, provided just 30 days for public comment and was not widely advertised. Many members of our communities rely on impacted lands for foods and medicines, however, none of the people we have spoken with was aware of the public comment period or any details of the proposed pest management plan. The continued use of chemical herbicides, including glyphosate which has been linked to cancer and is named in ongoing lawsuits is a matter of enormous public importance. We have concerns about the aerial and ground application of these chemicals to vital native plant species, as well as concerns about potential contamination of waterways. Glyphosate, triclopyr, Formula 40 can all have serious consequences on aquatic life. The status of sockeye salmon is of great importance to Indigenous people and we cannot risk contamination of local waterways, especially seeing as this year is expected to be a major spawning event. Given the complexity and potential severity of these issues, 30 days is simply not enough time for members of our communities to be adequately engaged and provide feedback. Berry pickers, medicine harvesters, and others who rely on these lands and forests for food and cultural purposes must have sufficient time to be consulted. The broad-leaf plant species that BC Timber Sales proposes to target with glyphosate, triclopyr, Formula 40 include salmonberry, huckleberry, thimbleberry, elderberry, salal, red raspberry, blueberry, mushrooms, Indian Hellebore, Devil’s club, fireweed. These are all culturally significant plants and medicines that local Indigenous peoples have harvested and relied upon for thousands of years. Targeting these native plants will have serious negative impacts on local Indigenous peoples, local wildlife, and wild salmon. Your government has pledged to undertake a paradigm shift in forest management in British Columbia, to prioritize community values and ensure the full involvement of Indigenous Nations and peoples. We are calling on you to honour your commitments. We look forward to your timely response. (name) Link to the proposal https://drive.google.com//1xgzI5y1C5khfu_YDo3ts6U41Vq/view

A personal journey for me lately has been piecing together the hardware of my brain, understanding my own uniqueness, and some of the challenges that come with that. It can be so easy to focus on the barriers, but how about the magic? Like Sensory Euphoria! Sure, one might have to wear earplugs sometimes, but how about those whole-body shivers when one sees a sunset? Or how the trickle of a creek feels like laughter? Or the absolute cool bliss of a dog-hug? I might cringe fro...m bass and banging, but I can feel the wind rush through me and the tickle of leaves in the trees. In a world that would have you limit yourself and squeeze you into a very tiny box of what is acceptable, it isn't always easy to love your authentic self. Too often we are told, "Sit still, be quiet, don't smile like that, why aren't you ___, why don't you ___..." Unlearning this has unfathomable facets and layers, but to start, the things you've been told are your weaknesses, perhaps they might actually be a strength. A superpower! Something to explore. A mind-shift and change of perspective can sometimes make all the difference. (Note: The hurdles are important to recognize, too, because you deserve accomodation and help, but you don't have to devolve yourself to what others say are flaws. You're worth morth more than that!)

There is a world of beauty hidden in the small things. After the rain, this moss was covered in dew gems.

We cannot bury our heads in the sand. For many of us, that is not a possibility anyway. But we cannot allow ourselves to drown in it. Be aware. Donate, organize, educate, help others, do the physical things you can do. Then, come back up to the surface. You need to breathe, or you will drown. ... And who can you possibly help if you've drowned? In survival (ie "if the plane crashes and you're stuck in the woods" survival), morale is a vital aspect of consideration. Mental health is just as important as shelter and food, because without it, you cannot take care of the physical steps to keep yourself alive. So, don't feel guilty for taking the time to take care of yourself. Don't talk yourself out of that therapy appointment, that doctor consultation, that half hour of meditation, that yoga class, that bath, that movie for the kids, that walk in the woods. Let yourself breathe.

We cannot do it all. There is just no possible way. We each have our own ways to contribute to matters that are important. Some protest, some write letters, some teach their students/children/friends/family, some put all their energy into the creation of something better, some into dismantling what is harmful. It is all of it important and vital.

A few years ago in the dark and dreary winter, I posted about finding a rainbow in a birch tree. (This isn't the birch tree, clearly!) I love how even in the dark, dreary, rainy/snowy times, there are pops of intense colour - sometimes hidden, and sometimes they seem to rise from the earth itself to find you. It's as if the Divine is reaching right through the shadow to say Hi, and remind you of the sun. These can feel like dreary times. There will be sun again

"Any patch of sunlight in a wood will show you something about the sun which you could never get from reading books on astronomy. These pure and spontaneous pleasures are ‘patches of Godlight’ in the woods of our experience." - C.S. Lewis (Photo credit: My Husband!)

"But when the melancholy fit shall fall Sudden from heaven like a weeping cloud, That fosters the droop-headed flowers all, And hides the green hill in an April shroud; Then glut thy sorrow on a morning rose,... Or on the rainbow of the salt sand-wave, Or on the wealth of globed peonies; Or if thy mistress some rich anger shows, Emprison her soft hand, and let her rave, And feed deep, deep upon her peerless eyes." - from Ode on Melancholy by John Keats I do love this part of the poem from Keats. No stranger to 'melancholy,' he sought healing in the wild things - the trees, the birds, the wind... Nature is a marvelous healer, and when 'melancholy' descends, she is there to hold us and wait out the night.

A Still Moment - Abimbola T. Alabi Take a moment. Put the worries behind. Take in the beauty around.... Let it relax your mind. Watch the golden glow Of the rising morning sun. Embrace the peaceful aura Of the break of dawn. Savor the soft caress Of the gently moving breeze. Listen to its nifty tune Among the swaying trees. Enjoy the lovely scene Of a floating butterfly. Graceful flight and happy tweets Of a bird perched up high. Peruse the evening sky In its dazzling splendor. The wide and open pallet Merging shapes and colors. Relish the loving sight Of children having fun, Skipping feet and carefree voices Under the setting sun. Spare a still moment Every once in a while. Take in the beauty around. Take it in with a smile.

Don’t let them monetize our insecurities. Expose the lies of white supremacy, colorism, fat phobia, etc. embedded in these social expectations. Resist the mess...ages that tell us we are not enough (or too much) as we are. #untigering HT Alyssa Marie Wellness

Red Hawk Healing 09.10.2020

There is power in rest. When you were a child and ill or hurt, did your caregiver ever tell you to get a good sleep so you could be better in the morning? Sleep heals. Rest heals. Being heals. Allowing heals.... We step back and let the innate healing power of our body do its work. Not everything requires our conscious effort. You're told to leave a pimple alone - don't tongue a cut in the mouth - don't dig around in a wound - just let the body heal. You can't make a seed grow by pulling apart the shell. You can't break a chick's eggshell for it when it is hatching. There is power in action, too, of course... There are times when surgery is needed, political action, protest, medication, a deep talk with a friend, but so often this *action* energy is our focus that we forget the intense power and beauty of sinking into the regenerative power of being. We forget the wisdom woven into our DNA, into the universe, into us and the world around us. When we rest, healing, insight, and innovation happen. Act, but also rest. Push, but also allow. Your body is so wise. What is it trying to tell you?

Golden light... I find meditating on or visualizing golden light extremely healing. It reconnects me with the divine order of things, and I remember that behind every event in my life, there is either divine influence or a lesson. This is particularly soothing when I am worried, stressed, or overwhelmed with events beyond my control or influence. Reconnecting with golden light brings immeasurable peace.... I took this photo not only for the gold, but because the trees look like they're hugging. Yes, I'm a big sap Enjoy. I hope it brings you peace, too.
