Wanna know what my bestselling dress has been this past weekend at the Handmade Market online show? Hands down, it's my new Apple-a-Day Caterpillar Dress. This fabric is incredibly cute (including the tiny blue worms on some of the apples) and would be equally cute as a sundress on a one or two year old, or as a top with jeans or leggings on a 3 year old. Red Thread peeps, I'm so sorry I've been neglecting you! Life during COVID has been a big juggle for me (and so many of you too, I know). I am finally working on a new batch of kids' dresses and they are almost ready. By popular request, I have increased the sizes of some of my kids' dresses to 10 years. My fabrics this season are gorgeous!! But I have exactly zero craft shows in 2020, so the only way to buy Red Thread clothing this fall will be online (unless I can pull off ...a studio sale or two, closer to Christmas - I hope I can!). I'll let you know as soon I have new dresses to show you. I'm going ahead with Sewing Camp this month, very very carefully and with smaller groups. Because enrollment has been constantly shifting this year, I have one or two spots open during the week of August 24-28. If this was an "ordinary" year, I would be at the Beaches Craft Show this weekend with hundreds of wonderful artisans in the sunshine! But this year is far from ordinary, of course. For thousands of artisans, the cancellation of all craft shows through the Spring and Summer (and who knows how the Fall will fare), has meant that many of us have had to adjust significantly. We miss our customers, our connections with our peers, and of course our incomes are affected too. The Be...aches Show is one of my favourites, and this year it has been moved (rather than cancelled) to the third week of September, in the hope that it will be possible to hold outdoor shows in the Fall. This year I am only doing two craft shows, IF they are able to proceed: The Cabbagetown Show, and The Beaches Show, both in September. I'm not doing any indoor Christmas Shows, for the first time in 15 years. Yikes! It's a big change. Instead, this year I've been focusing on my online fabric shop, https://studiofabricshop.com/, helping to support hundreds of people sewing masks and scrub caps for donation, and developing some online sewing classes (more about that soon). This is in addition to my part-time job as a fundraiser for the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario - you haven't heard from me for awhile, but I've been very busy! I continue to run Red Thread online, and I will do a Fall collection this year - most of my new designs will not be available until September, as there are not enough hours in the day for me to get this done earlier. But rest assured that I am planning more wonderful clothes for you, and I have a fantastic collection of new prints for this Fall. I can't wait to show them to you! Outdoor craft shows really are special, and because I can't share current photos of this weekend's show with you, here are some nice ones from outdoor shows in years past. Enjoy! Thank you Refluff (Adrienne) for the heartwarming message, you made me cry! It has truly been so inspiring to see how many people are just doing everything they can to help - people sewing as many masks as they can to fill the demand. Several of my friends are suffering financially, as am I, from the cancellation of craft shows for the next few months, if not longer. Many of these makers who sew, are sewing masks (and surgical caps and gowns), and giving them away for free. When all this is over, please remember the power of joint effort for a good purpose. Please remember the love my fellow makers put into this effort to help strangers. We’re going to need your support more than ever. For now, let’s keep on keeping each other safe.

Hello friends, sorry I haven't written for awhile; life has just been crazy (for all of us!). As you might have guessed, I had to cancel sewing camp, and craft shows are cancelled for the foreseeable future. My plans are to be at Handmade Market in May and The Beaches Show in June, but I'll keep you posted as they get closer. For now I'm working like crazy, sewing new things, and looking forward to a big shop update soon to show you what's new. I made it for a very good friend, whose brother died tragically this past year. This is his young daughter. Who's coming to the One of a Kind Show? It's only 2.5 weeks away!

Check out the beautiful work the kids made yesterday during our PA Day "Patchwork Primer." They made a 10 inch piece of lovely patchwork, then learned about the layers of a quilt, did some basic quilting (sewing the layers together by hand and machine) and then stitched a binding to finish it off. It was such a good day!

The Friday January 18, we're celebrating the PA Day with a one-day Sewing Camp! We'll be learning the basics of making beautiful patchwork. If you want to join us, please let me know ASAP. There are just a few spaces left, the fee is $80 and the hours are 9:30-3:30 (with some flexibility if you need it). It takes place at my house in the Greenwood/Mortimer area and I guarantee a fantastic creative day of sewing. Happy #OOAKday everyone! Red Thread is proud to be one of the 700+ makers who will be sharing our work with you. My OOAK journey began 40 years ago when I was a small child. My mother (a textile artist) did the show and I was her child labour, ironing silk scarves for ten cents apiece. I loved how the wet silk magically transformed before my eyes when I pressed it dry, and I loved roaming the aisles of the show awed by the treasures I saw around me, so many treasures and amaz...ing friendly people. Working in her booth was less fun, but I did it throughout my teen years and it taught me a lot. Knowing how much work the show is, my family was a bit surprised when I chose to continue on this path as an adult. But I love pouring my energy into designing and sewing beautiful things, the thrill of meeting so many customers who appreciate handmade, who love wearing the clothing I create, and who have become friends over the years. Being at the show among so many talented people is a treat, and the wonderful @ooak_toronto customers are the icing on the cake. I’ll be in booth B-30 this year for #ooak18 and when you come to see me you may be lucky to also spot my very sociable mother, who seems to enjoy these now-reversed roles but mostly just loves to be at the One of a Kind Show, even 40 years after her first show. Sewing Camp this past week was amazing - six wonderful kids chatting about life and politics while practicing their embroidery skills (creating beautiful work), encouraging and helping each other, and playing games together during our afternoon breaks outside. On the last day I was rewarded by seeing them play and sing music together, both while they were sewing and during our break on my front porch while scarfing down brownies and lemonade.
