Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) is currently in the process of selecting a developer to construct phrases 4 & 5 of the Regent Park Redevelopment. A...s part of this process TCHC, in partnership with the City of Toronto, must negotiate with the chosen developer to determine the Section 37 charges, namely the contribution the developer will make to the City or to the community, in exchange for carrying out the development. Often called "Community Benefits", these charges assist the City in the building of amenities, parks, libraries either in the immediate area or in other areas of the City. There is a lot of issues in how Section 37 charges are determined and applied. In addition to these existing issues there are new challenges due to the fact that Section 37 is now, as of June 2019, governed by Bill 108 of the Ontario Government and as a consequence, may result in limiting the amount of Section 37 charges that the City can obtain from a developer. At a rally and press conference held January 27, 2020, before a meeting at the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal hearing (LPAT), Joseph De Silva, a resident of the Inglewood Arms and Brendan Jowett, a lawyer from Neighbourhood Legal Services, present their case to the public. They are joined by Yogi Acharya from the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP), and other residents of the Inglewood Arms.

On today's Catch da Flava radio show for Tuesday, January 14, 2020, we focused on two separate but intertwined issues. They were youth #mentalhealth and the youth justice system. Our hosts were Shajuanah and Jamelia with co-hosts Kaila, Thalia, and Fazra. Our guests for the mental health segment was Michelle Cauch, a Student Success Advisor at Centennial College and Michelle Galeotalanza, a mental health professional and professor at Centennial College. They discussed what is... mental health, why is youth mental health important, why is youth mental health different from the other age groups, what are the major youth mental health issues, where should the youth get help, how can they seek trusting professionals to speak to on issues of mental health? These were just a few of the many interesting topics and questions we discussed. Our guest for the next segment was Rachelle Bloomfield, a staff, leader, and counselor at Peacebuilders. Peacebuilders Canada is a nonprofit organization that provides restorative programs and services to young people and works towards effecting change in our justice and education systems. We discussed how the school system handled conflicts and conflict resolutions, suspensions and warnings for conflicts, resilience, and making yourself a better person. On November 22nd, the Diva’s Girls Program met to discuss #socialjustice issues regarding a movie called, Missrepresentation. The purpose of the program was to debate whether the representation of women in the media has gotten better or worse since the movie premiered in 2011. The Diva’s were divided into two teams based on their beliefs. The girls who thought the representation of women in the media improved said it was because they think women are dominating the music chart...s, more recognition in film, more examples of women in sports, men identifying themselves as feminists and more people embracing the word ‘feminist’. The girls who believed the representation of women in the media is getting worse said it was because there are many missing girls, the damaging impacts of the Kim Kardashian effect, sex sells in the music industry, there is pressure to wear makeup and use dating apps, and finally the comment sections on social media platforms. The Diva’s engaged in a well thought out debate where they had 2 minutes to present their arguments After the debate, the facilitator drew a picture of a female on chart paper. The Diva’s were tasked to identify what a filter on Snapchat or Instagram would do to alter the face. They mentioned that her eyebrows would be thicker and darker, it would make her lashes fuller and longer, straighten her jaw, plump her lips, and make her skin lighter with no pimples. The girls were able to notice the damaging impacts filters can have on body image for young girls engaging in social media.
