Tom Roberts Biography (1909 - 1998) OSA, RCA Born in 1909, Tom Roberts was the grandson of Samuel Roberts, founder of the Roberts Gallery in 1842. Canada’s oldest Art Gallery. Spending a lot of time in the gallery during his youth, Tom Roberts resolved at an early age to become an artist. He studied art at Toronto's Central Technical School and at the Ontario College of art under such well-known artists as J.W. Beatty and Fred Haines. His influences included Beatty and the Group of Seven. While in military service during the Second World War, he portrayed army life in pencil and watercolour sketches. After the war he painted landscapes at many locations as he travelled across the country. In the mid-1980s he held over 30 solo exhibitions in Toronto alone. If interested please D.M. Yesterday marked the 40th Anniversary of the day Terry Fox was forced to end his run in Thunder Bay. I think it’s fair to say Terry’s run never really ended. To date the Terry Fox run has raised over $700,000,000 for Cancer Research. Leo Mol created two Bronze full size monuments honouring Terry Fox in Ottawa and Victoria. Our plaster bust (middle photo) created by Leo Mol was likely used as a reference to create both of the full size monuments.

To Celebrate the Group of Seven turning 100 Years old today (May 7, 1920) we thought we would share our collection of Group of 7 - Rare Sampson Matthews Prints. These prints were actually produced by some of the Group of Seven members themselves that worked and ran the Sampson Matthews Company in Toronto from 1941 to 1963. These pieces were produced using real oil paints and were very time intensive to produce one print as each colour had to laid individually. In the early days they were sent overseas to be hung in the barracks and various halls for our Canadian Troops during World War 2 to remind our troops of what they were fighting for. If interested in possibly acquiring one of these rare pieces of Canada’s art history please email us at: [email protected] to learn more.
