Taking a multidisciplinary approach to chronic disease management can be very successful. When it comes to managing arthritis, physical activity, healthy weight, rehabilitation and medication are necessary. Early diagnosis is important to minimize the damage to the joints; and too little exercise can cause weakness, pain and stiffness. #arthritis #strength #physicaltherapy #healthandwellness #fitness #motivation #painmanagement #exercise #jointpain #exercisetherapy

Winter has arrived mid fall, so it's time to be mindful about FALL PREVENTION. Falls are a leading cause of disability in our older adult population causing injury, hospitalization and need for more assisted care. How do they happen? Those with weaker hip and postural stability, core strength and proprioception are at an increased risk. Scroll for some quick balance exercises you can do anywhere! Even though our balance does get worse with age the literature shows RESULTS wit...h consistent exercise. Our seniors are more likely to be isolated during this time, I am here to provide a safe home training and counselling experience for your loved ones. 1Start with single leg balance with support, progress to tree pose. Keep your hips straight. 2Hip abduction, do not use the back to kick the hip out to the side. 3Standing crunch - lift with the core, squeeze the abs to lift the knee. 4Hip extension- square the hips and kick out with the glute. 5Back slide lunge with support, sink into the posterior hip of the front leg. 6Mini single leg squat - even weight in the foot, hips are level. #fallprevention #balance #arthritis #strength #physicaltherapy #personaltraining #healthandwellness #painmanagement #fitness #winterfitness Photo#7 Credit: The vicious circle of falling in the elderly. f you are feeling like you aren't making progress, think about where you started and the research shows an objective baseline measure that you can track will increase your sense of accomplishment and motivation to keep going along the way to reach your goals. What you measure for your baseline will be dependent on your goals, please DM me if you would like advice on this. What are your goals? Is it to be pain free? Improve your performance? Increase your strength? Be more f...lexible? Do a specific activity again? Examples of measurable outcomes: Cardio (one of my favourites!): how long you can maintain a certain pace for, how much distance you cover in x amount of time, how much distance or time total in your peak cardio zone. Strength and power: how high can you jump (measures leg power), how many times can you get up and down from your chair in a row, how many pushups, sit ups and/or pull ups can you do, keep track of sets and reps of any strength exercise. Rehab: how long/far can you walk (or other aggravating activity) until your first pain symptom, how much your joint range of motion has increased, how high is your pain on a scale of 1-10, how frequent is your pain. Flexibility: how far can you extend your shoulders behind you, can you touch your toes without bending your knees. #jointpain #personaltraining #healthylifestyle #wellness #physicaltherapy #painmanagement #fitnessjourney #fitnessgoals #exercisemotivation #Calgary
