Occupational science is our body of knowledge about occupation and its interaction between health and wellbeing. It has paved new paths for OT and helped legitimize the profession. References: Townsend, E. & Polatajko, H. (2013). Enabling occupation II: Advancing an occupational therapy vision for health, well-being, & justice through occupations (2nd ed.). Ottawa: CAOT Publications ACE [Image description] Graph paper background with dark and light purple text boxes.... Our body of knowledge: occupational science There is a blue paper icon with a magnifying glass on it. To understand what occupation is and how it relates to our health, identity and daily lives. Occupational science has coined many terms, including occupational justice. Occupational justice and there is a green leafy branch and a yellow and orange scales of justice icon. Having choice, meaning, balance, and participation in our occupations. We believe that everyone has a right to discover their potential and do the things that are meaningful to them. (Townsend & Polatajko, 2013). For OTs it is important to honour each client's life circumstances and individual needs and be an agent of change through advocacy and client empowerment. The development of occupational science has helped legitimize the practice of OT and the connection between health, wellbeing, and occupation. There is a yellow lightbulb in the corner. Factors affecting occupational justice and then Type of economy, policies and the values underlying these policies, and cultural values. These factors inform health, education, housing, and income support initiatives, accessible spaces, transportation, and other tools to support occupation. This is further contextualized by age, disability, gender, race & ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, location, employment and more (Townsend & Polatajko, 2013). There is a blue and grey set of gears in the corner. See more

OT Fact of the Week: This week, we’re talking about occupational therapists in the community! Occupational therapists working in this setting travel individually or as part of healthcare teams to assess and intervene in their clients' home environment. They are an integral part of access to community health care. ... Image Description: Infographic describing the role of occupational therapists. The post has four sections. Below the title, Occupational Therapy in the Community..., the first of the sections reads: Occupational therapists working in the community travel individually or as part of healthcare teams to assess and intervene in their clients' home environment. The following section discusses the clientele seen by community occupational therapists: people at risk of complications from injury or disease, people with chronic health conditions or disabilities, people recovering from disease or injury, people who are terminally ill. The third section names factors addressed by occupational therapists in this setting: physical, cognitive, emotional, behavioural, and environmental factors. The final section describes the outcomes produced by community occupational therapy in a bulleted list: Reduced pain; Increased physical activity in community-dwelling older adults; Slowed rate of decline in ability to participate in activities of daily living with age; Fewer falls, decreased fear of falling, and reduced cost of fall-related injuries; Improvement in mental health; Decreased risk of hospital visits; Reduced mortality risk. #QueensOT #occupationaltherapy #QueensOTMonth2020 See more

I am sure many of you have witnessed the movement sparked by the senseless and brutal killing of George Floyd and the protests around the world calling for justice. It has been long overdue for everyone to band together to change the status quo. Reflecting on and acknowledging our biases and learning how to challenge racism is essential to progress. We must strive to care for one another and have the courage and respect to fight against racism. We can begin to accomplish this... by uniting in protest, amplifying Black voices and experiences, and supporting organizations that are fighting for justice. Racial discrimination will not be tolerated and it is imperative that we speak and act against it. Every individual deserves the opportunity to live safely without fear of injustice, regardless of the colour of their skin. We, the RTS, support the Queen’s and Kingston communities in protesting against the injustice faced by the Black community. As a council, we are going to listen, learn, and commit to making a change. As future health care professionals we will stand together to challenge racism within the health care system. In the coming days and weeks, we will be transparent and update everyone regarding how we are taking action to fight against racism. There are many different ways you can show your support. Please take the time to research organizations that are involved in anti-racism work, and how you can start challenging the part you play in systemic racism and oppression of Black people. Below we have listed several key resources that will assist you in further educating yourself to help make a change.
