Dr. Gibala will be discussing the potential for brief vigorous physical activity to enhance health and fitness. HIIT to Get Fit: Physiological Basis of Interval Training in Health and Disease... Presenter: Dr. Martin Gibala Date: Thursday, December 10, 2020 Time: 7 pm Interval training refers to an intermittent style of exercise in which bouts of more intense effort are interspersed with recovery periods. The potential of the method beyond high-level athletes has been recognized for decades. A resurgence of scientific interest has advanced our understanding of the physiological responses to interval training, including in people with cardiometabolic diseases. This session will consider the potential for brief vigorous physical activity to enhance health and fitness, including simple, practical approaches that do not require specialized equipment. Dr. Martin Gibala is a professor and the Faculty of Science Research Chair in Integrative Exercise Physiology at McMaster University. His research examines the mechanistic basis of exercise responses in humans, and associated health impacts. Dr. Gibala’s science communication efforts include a bestselling book on the topic of time-efficient exercise, The One-Minute Workout: Science Shows a Way to Get Fit That’s Smarter, Faster, Shorter (Penguin Random House). He also codeveloped a massive open online course, Hacking Exercise For Health: The surprising new science of fitness, which is freely offered by McMaster University though the Coursera platform.
