Are YOU ready for the winter? Here are some home insulation tips! Step 1: Do a smoke test. Take a lit candle and put it close to or around the edges of your windows and doors. If the smoke from the candle swirls, it means you have an air leak.... Step 2: Leaks can be easily corrected by placing caulk around the window. If you use clear caulk around outer edges you don’t have to worry about matching paint colours. Step 3: Install a door sweep at the bottom edge of doors to prevent warm air from escaping when a door is shut. When it comes to sliding doors, you can install closed-cell foam weather stripping inside the door. This is a self-adhesive backing that will hold the stripping in place. Step 4: To seal in the heat and prevent insects from entering the home, just seal around baseboards of your interior walls and floors. Use sheet metal and high-temperature (clear) caulk. Step 5: Walk around your home and check the seams between exterior walls, doors, and windows. Make sure you also check dryer vents, outdoor electrical outlets, pipes and water spigots for potential air leaks.
