I recently read a post from another group asking about handling emotion in therapy that I responded to. I thought you might find the response interesting. The i...mportant thing to remember is that the client has to feel the feelings before it can be released, otherwise we are just doing positive thinking and the Unconscious Mind will over ride the "suggestions" etc. and quickly return to their old model of the world. The important question is how much do they have to feel it. For healing to be complete, 2 things are necessary, 1 The client must learn different lessons (Reframing)... this can be handled in talk therapy, but the second thing is that the emotion connected to the event must be released (which is best handled in Hypnotherapy) as that is the glue that holds the old beliefs/issues in place and for that to happen the body must be wired into the problem before it can be released. Dissociation is the best way to do this most comfortably..... using an imaginary plexiglass screen above the memory and in severe cases I have walked the client around the room while releasing the emotion to keep them dissociated can be useful. I always look for an emotional reaction, and with some clients who are too dissociated in their lives, I celebrate when I get an emotional reaction from them.
