Friday Intros! Every Friday we will do a short intro to each of our staff, who they are, what their hobbies are, etc. Keep watch as they tell us a bit about themselves! What made you become a Physiotherapist? ... Ashley Desloges - I knew as a child I wanted to have a job that was physically active. I ended up receiving my undergrad in Kinesiology specializing in Athletic Therapy at University of Manitoba in 2011. I moved to Montreal, Quebec where I studied dance and worked alongside a physiotherapist. I learned a lot from the physiotherapist and decided to further my studies, return to Manitoba and pursue a Physiotherapy degree. I graduated in 2016 from University of Manitoba with a Masters in Physiotherapy and have mostly been working in private practice until recently joining Amanda Reimer Mobile Physiotherapy. http://reimerphysiotherapy.ca/ #physicaltherapy #winnipegbusiness #supportlocalwinnipeg #mobilephysiotherapy #winnipegphysio

Parkinsons and Physiotherapy While there is no cure for Parkinsons disease, there are many things that can help you to improve your function and increase your overall quality of life. Parkinsons affects everybody differently, and a physiotherapist will work with you to assess what your individual needs are. Some ways a physiotherapist may help you include: Working with you on your gait (walking pattern) and teaching you ways to correct it Exercises to help with musc...le rigidity. We often prescribe practicing very over-exaggerated movements to help combat the muscle rigidity that comes with Parkinsons. Practising these movements over and over again can help your brain to relearn what a normal movement is. Range of motion exercise and stretches Teaching you techniques to make tasks such as getting out of a chair or sitting up out of bed easier Teaching you techniques to help with freezing Safely working with you to challenge your balance and improve your balance reactions Posture exercises There is a growing amount of research that supports aerobic exercise as helping with the symptoms of Parkinsons disease. We now know that aerobic exercise is healthy for your heart and lungs, but also improves oxygenation to the brain and can improve its function. Aerobic exercise for individuals with Parkinsons is most beneficial if it is not autonomic, it is best if you are doing things like changing your direction or speed. Some forms of aerobic exercise such as a two wheeler bike may not be safe for you if your balance is impaired. A physiotherapist will provide guidance on setting up an aerobic exercise program that works for you.
