Season's Greetings! This year our team put a creative spin on our annual Secret Santa making it a fun way to give back to our community. Each team member was gifted a toy that would be the perfect gift for them as a child. We will now be giving these as donations to our local Christmas Care. We combined our "gift exchange " with a traditional, albeit covid-19 restriction compliant, Christmas dinner with all trimmings. World Kindness Day is a global day that promotes the importance of being kind to each other, to yourself, and to the world. This day, celebrated on November 13 of each year, has the purpose is to help everyone understand that compassion for others is what binds us all together.

In this edition of St. Thomas Tonight with Dan Reith (Reith & Associates Insurance and Financial Services Limited) and Grayden Laing (Establish Media) we talked... about three main topics as well as what was brought up by viewers. First, we discussed the declaration of emergency in Aylmer for the Nov 7th anti-Covid rally. Nothing in the order seems to actually prevent a peaceful assembly, so it appears to set the stage for limiting the municipalities liability while also allowing them to access additional government funding, if needed, to properly safe guard the assembly, eg. maybe cover the cost for additional peace officers. Second, we talked about an issue in London we read about on CTV’s site, where a merchant posted a sign saying No Mask, No problem. We don’t ask questions cause it’s none of our business. Our question, since the notice was posted next to the mandated sign stating masks are required, was asking whether posting a similar sign would be seen as an issue by our health unit, Southwestern Public Health. We didn’t receive a yes or no, but they did state they would try and contact the merchant to educate them while passing the matter on for enforcement to the Ontario Ministry of Labour and the local bylaw officer. Since merchants are not legally allowed to ask why a customer isn’t wearing a mask, if a merchant posts a sign fully explaining the regulations to customers why is that seen as a problem? We are still not clear on why a merchant attempting to educate their customers is considered a matter for enforcement. We contacted the Ontario Ministry of Labour for comment and to paraphrase, they said that if a merchant allows people within their premises without masks it is up to the merchant to make sure addition measures are in place to protect their workers. The full response is in the video. So it’s unclear why this is an issue for a health unit since all merchants should have those protocols in place anyway, since the odds are that someone who is unmasked will enter their premises intentionally or unintentionally. Our final topic was about editorializing in news and how it seems to have drastically increased, especially in regards to political figures in the past decade or so. Our question is why? Why are we moving from stating facts to editorializing the news and posting opinion columns? Our opinion, or editorializing (if you will), is that this is an unhealthy move for a society - and leads to distrust of the media and news outlets, which we need to have faith in as a healthy society.
