Today’s #whyirelaywednesday is one of our KES staff members whom we all love dearly, Mr.Faucher. He Relays in honour of his father, Jean Marie Faucher. Read what he has written below In the summer of 2016, my dad developed a small blister on the tip of his second toe. He went to the doctor who took a biopsy and gave him some ointment to help. Months passed and the blister never healed. He returned to his doctor who kept suggesting various topical treatments. I rememb...er my dad telling me over the Christmas break that he found a trick that helped dry up the blister: he’d put his foot in a bucket of water with a tiny bit of bleach. In early February my dad came in from shoveling the driveway and noticed a bruise that ran from his inner thigh to his foot. My older sister, Jen, took him to the hospital. A few days later they returned to the hospital and were told that my dad had cancer. Shocked, my sister asked to get a printout of the pathology report. They returned to the car in tears. My sister read page one: tumor in the lymph node in the groin. Then, she turned the page to see another diagnosis, this one from five months prior in September: the blister on my dad’s toe was actually an aggressive form of melanoma. He was never told. He never received the diagnosis or proper treatment. Despite this terrible news, my dad stayed positive. He went to all of his appointments with a smile, he laughed and joked with the doctors, and he did everything he could to stay healthy. He never complained. My mom and sister were there with him every step of the way. He looked and felt healthy throughout the summer. In early October things took a turn for the worse. Sensing the urgency, my brothers Ted and Vince, my sister Jen and I reunited with my mom and dad at our home in Dorion. We had supper around the table like we did growing up. My dad was so happy to have us all together again, despite the circumstances. We ate and drank and laughed together and we toasted to the good times. Two weeks later, on October 16, my dad passed away. He was home and surrounded by his loved ones. He was 78. My father taught me countless life lessons and most were by example. He was a hard-working man who tried his best at everything he did. He was my mom’s teammate for over fifty years and he loved his family - and his dogs! - more than anything. He was the best Grampa to his seven grandchildren, including Maya and Chaz. We miss him dearly. #relayforlife

Today’s #survivorsunday is Joanne Greenslade, one of our amazing staff members at King’s Edgehill. She has been a survivor since 2009. Read more about her and her journey below, written by Marilyn Redden. If you look at Joanne’s Facebook page you will see posts about family, empathy, positivity, hope, and kindness.... (And a picture or two of her riding a camel across the desert.) If she is your wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, or cousin, she will stop at nothing to look after you and make things right for you. If she is your friend, she has your back, and if you share an office with her, she is your loudest cheerleader. If you are fighting cancer, she is there to support you. Joanne and her mother were diagnosed with breast cancer at the very same time in 2009. She has made it her mission to embrace life, living every day to the fullest. Joanne has been spreading joy and kindness to us at King’s-Edgehill since 2015. When a panel of Canada’s leading cancer surgeons, oncologists, and psychologists was formed to study the correlation between a positive outlook and cancer recovery, Joanne was an obvious choice to participate.
