101 years ago Regent Theatre was opened, located at 50 King St E, Oshawa, ON. The theatre featured classical Georgian architecture looks, and is one of the last buildings in Oshawa with this classical inspiration style. The theatre also featured an original air conditioning system that worked by fans blowing air over blocks of ice placed in racks. The theatre attracted huge audiences daily by featuring the best films offered worldwide. By 1927, the theatre's annual attendance... numbered over half a million and was described by The Oshawa Daily Reformer as, ...a living memorial to its community spirit, and [is] one of the finest moving picture theatres in Canada [...] the handsomest structure of its kind between Toronto and Montreal. Worried that the moving picture industry was going to be just a fad, the theatre was also built to accommodate live performances by moving the screen to the back of the stage. The theatre closed its doors in 1989. For two decades after the theatre was turned into an ultimately failed nightclub, was home to a small theatre production company, and had talk of closing. However, the theatre was saved and preserved by the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). Today the theatre is used for lecture and educational purposes, while also hosting film screenings and live performances occasionally at nights or on weekends. #didyouknow #regenttheatre #oshawahistory
