As the government of Ontario announces new lockdown measures, we wanted to pass along the message that we will be remaining open for in person appointments and tele-rehab services. As per the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario: No further restrictions on physiotherapy practice have been announced to date. Physiotherapists and other regulated health professionals may continue to operate, consistent with current guidelines for regulated health professionals. Stay safe everyone. #lockdown #physiotherapy #physicaltherapy #pelvicfloorphysio

@allthingspelvic An update on our athlete @emilyzurlinden Emily is looking forward to returning to competition in 2021, with a focus on Nationals. At Nationals this year, she set the Ontario deadlift record for her weight class! Looking forward to seeing where the next year takes you Repost from Emily: A few days ago I posted a video of L sit pull-ups. A friend of mine noticed that my abdominal separation is still present...and it is.... I have always had a small separation and just at the top year where my stomach meets my xiphoid process (bottom of the sternum). When I got pregnant, I learned this separation is called diastasis rectus (DR) and it will likely get worse as my pregnancy continued...and it did. Working with Renee at @allthingspelvic we were able to monitor the severity of my DR, modify movements in an effort to reduce tension on my linea alba (the thin membrane between the sides of the abdominal wall), learn proper diaphragm breathing and pelvic floor activation and relaxation, all in an effort to keep my pelvic floor (and all its parts) healthy. At the end of my pregnancy, I had about 3.5-4cm separation and many signs of pelvic floor dysfunction (leaking when sneezing, coughing, standing up, rolling over in bed...you name it! (These are common but not normal! You don’t have to live with it!!) With continued rehab and monitoring, Renee was able to get me pelvic dysfunction free! No more accidents or wearing pads for regular life. I am lifting at the National level with no leaking! Back to the DR - My DR is about 0.5cm and probably won’t get any closer, but it’s not the size, it’s the responsiveness of the tissue that is most important and Renee has been monitoring that as well. We agree that I’m good to go, even though now I have a line where I didn’t before. I never would have known how to navigate pregnancy and post partum without her guidance. I strongly recommend seeing a pelvic floor physiotherapist if you have symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction, even if you’ve never had a baby! I wouldn’t be the athlete I am today if it weren’t for Renee #powerlifting #powerliftingwomen #powerliftingmom #postpartum #pelvicfloorhealth #diastasisrecti #mombod See more

"The first step when we get really gripped in fear is to calm our sympathetic nervous system. A simple way to do this is with long, deep breaths. Take at least three full breaths, counting to five with the inhale, and counting to five with the exhale. And with the exhale, intentionally release tension. That begins to calm down the nervous system."
