As many people know, even though my passion and life work are the cetaceans, my favorite sea creature is the nudibranch. What are nudibranchs? Nudibranchs are a group of soft-bodied, marine gastropod molluscs which shed their shells after their larval stage. They have extraordinary colors, striking forms, intricate patterns, and different sizes.... Nudibranchs are found throughout the world's oceans, ranging from the Arctic, through temperate and tropical regions, to the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. They are almost entirely restricted to salt water, although a few species are known to inhabit lower salinities in brackish water. Nudibranchs live at virtually all depths, from the intertidal zone to depths well over 700 m (2,300 ft), but are most abundant in warm shallow reefs, tropical waters. Most of the nudibranchs are benthic animals, found crawling over the substrate. Their scientific name, Nudibranchia, means naked gills, and describes the feathery gills and horns that most wear on their backs. Do you go scuba diving? Have you seen them? Los nudibranquios son moluscos gasterópodos marinos de cuerpo blando que arrojan sus conchas después de su etapa larval. Tienen colores extraordinarios, formas llamativas, patrones intrincados y diversos tamaños. Los nudibranquios son cosmopolitas, habitando desde el ártico, regiones templadas y tropicales, hasta el Océano Austral alrededor de la Antártida. Se limitan casi por completo al agua salada, aunque algunas especies habitan en aguas salobres o con baja salinidad. Los nudibranquios se encuentran en todas las profundidades, desde la zona intermareal hasta profundidades de más de 700 m (2.300 pies), pero son más abundantes en arrecifes cálidos poco profundos y en aguas tropicales. La mayoría de los nudibranquios son animales bentónicos, que se arrastrán sobre el sustrato. Su nombre científico, Nudibranchia, significa branquias desnudas, y describe las branquias y cuernos emplumados que la mayoría llevan en sus espaldas. ¿Vas a bucear? ¿Los has visto?
