REPTILE CAMP SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: Cuban Tree Frog Osteopilus septentrionalis... Physical Description Cuban tree frogs are mostly gray, brown, or green, with young frogs having more green coloration than adults. These tree frogs have rough, warty skin with blotchy or mottled patterning. Cuban tree frogs also have the ability to change their color and pattern to camouflage themselves (mostly changing to a lighter or darker color). The inside of the Cuban tree frog’s legs are bright yellow, which is used to confuse predators by flashing when they jump. Size and Lifespan Cuban tree frogs are the largest tree frogs in North America, ranging from 2 to 5.5 in length, and the females can be almost twice as large as the males. These tree frogs typically have a lifespan of 5-10 years in the wild, and up to 12 years in captivity. Native Habitat The Cuban tree frog is native to Cuba, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands. This large frog has been introduced in Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and the British Virgin Islands, as well as the the Key West region of Florida and is now considered an invasive species in those regions. Cuban tree frogs are known to inhabit a variety of habitats, including low-density suburban development, small towns, agricultural areas (particularly ones with exotic plants), and lowland forests and swamps. Within their habitats, they can be found in damp, shady areas, particularly around shrubs and trees. They prefer to be near medium and large sized trees and prefer conditions where the temperature lies above 10 degrees Celsius. Food/Eating habits The invasive Cuban tree frogs eat a wide variety of food items, including snails, millipedes, spiders, and a vast array of insects. They are predators of several of Florida's native frogs and are cannibalistic. They are also known to eat lizards and even small snakes. Reproduction and Development Breeding for Cuban tree frogs is typically random. The male Cuban tree frog reaches sexual maturity at 120 days on average, and the female tree frog reaches sexual maturity at 255 days. The Cuban tree frog breeds throughout the year, with peaks from May to October. Females will lay a partial clutch of eggs numbering between 100-1,000, and a full clutch can number above 3,000 eggs! Furthermore, eggs can hatch within 30 hours of being laid. Conservation/Facts Cuban tree frogs are able to secretes a toxic mucus from their skin which can cause a burning sensation if it makes contact with a person's eyes. Cuban Tree frogs have 6 rows of teeth. Cuban tree frogs have unusual eating habits. They swallow the food with the help of their eyeballs. Reptile Camp staff have been preforming high quality live animal demonstrations for over 20 years and would like to make your event a WILD ONE! Our shows are usually 1 hour long and we feature around 12 animals at each presentation including arachnids, amphibians, turtles, tortoises, snakes, lizards and crocodilians. Most of the animals we use for programming have been rescued through the OSPCA, animal control, and local bylaw officers. None of the animals we have in our care... can legally be released into the wild, and they would not survive even if they could be. These former pets are now animal ambassadors that help spread our important messages about conservation, environmental protection, responsible pet ownership and more. We can customize your presentation to any curriculum for schools, guides, scouts and other educational groups! We can do presentations for day cares, retirement homes, long term care facilities, festivals and events, corporate events, or almost any other gathering of people! If there is a group of people that want to have fun and learn about these fascinating creatures then we want to share some time with you! Our shows are designed to be 1 hour long; however, we can alter this to fit your needs and schedule. We book on a first come first serve basis and then book additional shows around their selected time. We usually recommend about a month’s notice to get your preferred time and date. Anything less we should still be able to accommodate you, however we will already have some commitments to work around. You simply commit to a date and time and send a small deposit and then we can handle the remainder of the payment on the day on your show. We accept cash, check (made out to Reptile Camp), Pay Pal and E-transfers! If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me via email [email protected] or by phone at 905-531-5367. We look forward to providing you an amazing party adventure and making your event one will remember for years to come! Yours in Adventure, Steve Featherstone
