There’s plenty of encouraging news for our cause in another recent scientific poll: 79% of Canadians say the British royal family is irrelevant or less relevant. On a separate question, those who oppose the queen as our head of state, swearing oaths to her, and putting her on coins and the $20 bill has risen by 14 points since last year. Happy Flag Day! Today is the 56th anniversary of the Maple Leaf flag. It's reason to celebrate the creation of a major symbol of our independence, when we finally stopped borrowing a British ensign. And it's a reminder that we have yet to stop borrowing Britain's head of state. While we work toward that goal, Flag Day recalls a federal rule that needs fixing. Ottawa insists some 30 British royal and vice-regal flags all take precedence ahead of the Maple Leaf, including that of a disgraced governor general. It's insulting. Support for ending the monarchy in this country has risen to 60%, the highest in 10 years, according to a new Ipsos Global @dvisor poll conducted this month for Global News. That’s up seven points from last year, and 12 points higher than in 2011. The poll also asked if we should become a republic "similar to the US". Support for that is at 51%. But that question’s wording could be taken to suggest that we end parliamentary democracy, which patriating our head of state would ...not do. That may have inflated the ’no’ responses, meaning support for our cause is actually higher. Meantime, those who feel the monarchy helps define our identity is shrinking. It's at 55%, down five points from 2019, and even more (seven points) from 2002. With six in 10 Canadians ready to jettison the monarchy -- and growing -- leaders should take their cue and seize the future. Call the queen! This weekend’s election in Newfoundland & Labrador is in jeopardy, with a recent Covid outbreak in the St. John’s area. Poll workers have quit in fear, forcing the province to delay the election in nearly half its electoral districts. Leaders say there is no constitutional mechanism for postponing the vote, as a whole. Premier Andrew Furey is consulting with the province’s representative of Queen Elizabeth to discuss options. ... Call the queen! says Newfoundland and Labrador NDP leader Alison Coffin, echoing an idea (in jest?) from CBC As It Happens host Carol Off. This points to the absurdity and irony of resorting to deliberations about a democratic provincial election with Buckingham Palace or an unelected provincial viceroy who, as with all Lieutenant Governors, is appointed by a queen in England! We pay lifetime spending allowances for FORMER governors general. And there are now five of them. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is fed up with that. Its petition to end the custom has generated over 100,000 signatures.
