#WomenInSTEM PhD trainee Parandoush Abbasian I am pursuing my Ph.D. in Medical Physics under the supervision of Dr. Lawrence Ryner at the University of Manitoba. My project is focused on differentiating treatment-related changes from true tumor progression in glioblastoma patients by utilizing radiomics and machine learning to incorporate biological targeting and improve treatment and assessment of brain tumours. I am passionate about improving the precision and effectivenes...s of radiotherapy treatment as a future certified medical physicist. My lifelong endeavor is to instill more hope in patients, especially those struggling with the hardship of a chronic disease like cancer. Being a women in science can be challenging sometimes, but definitely rewarding at the end. It might take twice as effort to prove yourself in a work place or land a job, but this shouldn’t take the confidence from you. If you believe in your capabilities, hold your dreams tight. It will happen. Life is full of opportunities. See more
An important message from Dr Watkins
PhD trainee Iresha Ratnayake (Community Health Sciences, supervised by Senior Scientist Dr Decker) - "My goal is to conduct applied health services research that will strengthen Manitoba’s cancer service delivery system. I am proud to be a woman working in #STEM because women contribute creative and innovative ideas to science. I am grateful to be mentored by two brilliant scientists who are women. Thank you to all the women in science who came before me for proving that a scientist is not defined by their gender."
Recruiting a PhD/Postdoc fellow for Canadian Institutes of Health Research Health System Impact Fellowship to assess the impact of implementing a new patient navigation system. Supervised by Drs Decker and Pitz. https://cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/51721.html?filter=manitoba
Congratulations Iresha Ratnayake, PhD student of Dr Decker, on your 1st first-author paper describing the variety of #BreastCancer surgery treatments and outcomes in Manitoba. The major finding of Iresha's paper is that "Women who underwent breast-conserving surgery had the shortest median length of stay and women who underwent mastectomy with immediate reconstruction had the longest median length of stay. In-hospital post-operative complications were higher among women who received mastectomy with immediate reconstruction (9.9%)." https://mdpi.com/966206 MDPI CancerCare Manitoba News Canadian Partnership Against Cancer University of Manitoba
