Happy new year everyone! 2020 has been one wild ride of a year, with big challenges and changes for many of us. Whether you’re feeling super motivated or maybe super stuck, who you are now is different from who you will be in the future. (Just as your present self is different than who you were last year, or 10 years ago.)... This is inescapable, and while we may not have control over what happens, we can control how we feel and what we do about it. So let’s make the most of 2021, and get excited to meet our future selves! Yours in wellness, Meagan

Food is not a cure-all. I see WAY too much blame and shame placed on people because of the misconception that if we just eat perfectly then we'll be perfectly healthy, and if you're not healthy it's your fault. NOOOOPE.... Other contributing factors are: GENETICS - Yes, environment can pull the trigger on the gun that genetics loaded, but food is NOT the only thing in the environment. EXPERIENCES - Traumatic experience can literally change our DNA, and if we want to address the root causes of disease then making sure that children and adults are safe and supported is of huge importance. CONNECTION - People who are isolated from both other humans and nature have worse baseline health, and also have worse treatment outcomes. We are social critters and need to connect with other humans, animals, and nature. SOCIAL STATUS - Poverty, education, proximity to nature, environmental contaminants, occupational hazards, discrimination based on race / gender / sexuality, etc., access to health care, access to clean water, whether or not you live in a conflict zone, and a zillion other factors. We should eat well because it does contribute to our health, I will never deny that. But don't for a second think that a diet can solve all your problems, and for the love of GOD do not try and tell every every unhealthy person you meet that if they ate better they would be cured. Taking the time to become really well acquainted with, and accepting of myself has been one of the most worthwhile and productive things I've ever done. As soon as stopped telling myself I wasn't good enough the way I was, I made more progress towards my goals than in several previous years! Accepting yourself (or others) does not mean giving up on the desire to change and grow.... It DOES mean that you find the realistic optimism required to create a truly sturdy foundation for anything you want to build. If you want to know yourself better, then join me this coming Thursday, January 28th, with Dr. Joseph Ferrari! We'll be delving into procrastination and how to truly get beyond it. The link to all the info and registration is in the link below, hope to see you there! https://resilienceinmotion.ca/end-procrastination Yours in wellness, Meagan #resilienceinmotion #purposefulimperfection #dailyimperfectaction #mindbody #resilience #wellnessjourney #innerstrength #inspiration #loveyourself #youcandoit #itsworthit #getstarted #believeinyourself #yoga #weighttrainingforwomen #strengthtraining #meditation #flexibility #strongwomen #healthyliving #healthylifestyle #beautyatanysize #normalizenormalbodies #doyou #alwaysgrowing #waterlooregion #kitchenerwaterloo #kwawesome #procrastination #getitdonenow

I've found that not taking action is only easier until it builds up to be the hardest part of every day. Sometimes the kickstart that we need to make change is to scrutinize our comfort zone, and come to terms with how uncomfortable that space has actually become. That's why I'm going back to school in January - my fear of failure gradually got dwarfed by my fear of regret.... So tell me - what familiar thing do you want to change? What are the hard parts of both staying the same or taking the leap? You've got this! Let me take a moment to remind you that a large part of what you see on social media is not real. Today I took a selfie of my earrings and headband combo, both of which were given to me and seemed to fit the snowy day perfectly, and they're hella cute. I was going to add it to my stories, and because there are filters available I started swiping to see which might look nice.... I'm not new to Instagram, but I was still surprised at the huge difference it made!!! The texture and colour of my skin is completely different. I wrestled for a minute about which one I should use, and then thought "to heck with it, I'll share both". And here we are. So remember that while comparison is always a dangerous game, it's ESPECIALLY true when you are comparing your real-life body to an image of someone else, in print or online. There's a very good chance that what you are seeing does NOT reflect reality. Roosevelt was right when he said "Comparison is the thief of joy." It's important that we learn to admire others without questioning ourselves. The glute-ham raise can be a challenging exercise to get comfortable with, but it’s one that I find very much worth the effort! You get loads of (you guessed it) glute and hamstring activation, plus some stability in the low back, shoulders and neck. As a little bonus you can also get your calves and ankles in on the action. If you’re someone who sits all day and feels like you’re being pulled forward, this can definitely help straighten you up.... There are plenty of options to start slow and progress for anyone who is interested, and this is one that’s especially nifty to have a trainer to help you. Reach out any time and I’d be happy to help you out. Let me know if you try it! Made it outside for a windy walk on my old route yesterday, and had a great call with a client who has some answers to a medical mystery and is ready to get back to exercise! Fitness is something many of us take for granted until we don’t have it, and this call was a good reminder of that. Especially as winter approaches and going for a walk gets a little less pleasant. (Please shovel your damn sidewalks.) So I’m doing my best to take advantage of the mild temperatures while ...they’re here. How have you been making use of your time and abilities lately? Do you often think of how you’d regret not taking action if you suddenly couldn’t any more? Comment or send me a PM! I often feel like hiding away, even when there’s something that I really want to do. Hiding often seems easier than struggling through growth. But I have come to learn that grieving lost potential and carrying the weight of regret is also a difficult task. So when things get tough I try to remember that it’s not just about choosing easy or hard, it’s actually about deciding what kind of discomfort you want to live with.... How about you? Have you found that taking the easy way out is more difficult then you thought? Let’s do the thing. Are you contemplating starting a new habit? Perhaps you think it will be better to wait until Monday? I disagree! Waiting to start until Monday puts a lot of pressure on the week ahead, and is a habit that perfectionists use.... It also leaves us vulnerable to feeling like the whole week needs to be perfect in order to be "good", and if you mess up on Tuesday the tendency is to throw away the whole week and start *next* Monday. We throw away a lot of weeks that way! The days of the week are a recent human construct and our bodies don't recognize them anyway, so you might as well start today. I DARE YOU. I double DOG dare you. Let me know if you do it! Yours in wellness, Meagan Psst - have you signed up for my Purposeful Imperfection challenge yet? Is it really that we don’t have time, or should we really be saying that it’s just easier not to do it? I walked to and from work today, and I was reminded of how much I used to do this before I had consistent access to a car. I made time for the 25 minute walk because I had to, and I always got there on time. Now that I have a car to fall back on, I sometimes forget to leave myself enough time and then have to drive so I’m not late. I have a safety net and I use it.... So my commitment for the rest of 2020 is to walk more, even if that means I’m home a bit less. I know I’ll still make the time to GSD because I will have to. As a bonus, I’ll get more opportunities to see beautiful little things like this leaf! How about you? Is there something that you want to do but you don’t because it’s easier not to? It's possible to be both prisoner and warden: Live in search of validation from others. Live in fear of criticism from others.... I've done both, and I can tell you it left me feeling vulnerable and empty. But when we hold the keys to our own imprisonment, we are also capable of letting ourselves out! It's not an overnight decision that we can make and then be free forever, but it is a decision we can make over and over to not allow other people to decide how we live our lives. Because here's the thing: people are going to praise you or ridicule you ANYWAY - it's us that decide whether or not it's important. As Brooke Castillo says, only we can hurt our own feelings. If this speaks to you and you want to know more, reach out! A huge part of what I do these days is helping others realize their own strength of body and mind. When you are confident in your own abilities, the opinions of others tend to fade a little more into the background. Yours in wellness, Meagan

Today is Remembrance Day here in Canada, and for many of us it's a time to honour those that have given their lives so that we can be free. To me, it's also a time that I take a look at how I can honour those ancestors with action. Not just the big picture of what's going on in the world and how I can help create large-scale change, but I look around and see what is available for me to do close by.... Picking up trash on my favourite trail, volunteering with or donating to a charity, participating in community events. All of these seemingly small things can accumulate quickly to make that big-picture change that seems so unattainable sometimes. Just imagine if everyone took time to ask their neighbourhood, "How can I help?" It would have a massive collective impact! Sometimes we can't see the trees for the forest - we're so focused on the huge task that we forget it's made up of individual things. I would love to know - what small action are you taking to make the world around you just a little bit better? Yours in wellness, Meagan PS. A hearty vegan soup for a cold day! Pozolé Verde is a Mexican bean soup with tomatillos and hominy. I was planning to make something else with my can of hominy (a kind of corn), but just happened to see tomatillos in the grocery store and am so glad I tried it! It’s tangy and just spicy enough for my sissy tastebuds to make it interesting.
