Over the last little while I have had several people ask me what they should be counting: MACROS or CALORIES. Counting calories is just that couting the total amount of calories you can consume without taking into consideration the nutritional value in each calorie. Counting Macros refers to counting the three essintial components to any diet : CARB, FATS, PROTIENS. So how does this break down into calories??? Simple.... Carb: 1 gram = 4 calories Protien: 1 gram= 4 calories Fat: 1 gram=9 calories You could be eating low calories each day but not getting nutrient dense foods- making healthy food choices is the key! Some people work better on a slightly higher carb diet, others protien. You need to test the waters and see what works best for and then allocate your food appropriatley. Ie: say a diet of 40% carbs, 40% protien, 20% fat how many calories of each do you allow- thats is simple math: so a 150lb person Using a 2000 calorie a day diet your macros would look something like this: Protein : 1-1.5g of protien per lbs of fat =150grams X4=600 cal Fat-2000X .40=400 cal /9=44grams of fat Since 400cal is fat and 600cal is protien that leaves 600 calories for carbs so 600/4=150grams of carbs Hope that helps! Any questions just ask.
