How I deal with severe hearing loss. I don’t typically spend much time talking about my hearing loss. I am not one to use a handicap as an excuse or to try... to get sympathy. In fact, I consider my lack of hearing to be responsible for my other senses to be so acute, and believe the net sum is a positive. Perhaps much of what I have achieved would not have come to pass had I not lost my hearing at age 2 to Scarlet Fever. How I dealt with my hearing loss was pretty specific in my early years, and how I deal with it now is quite different, due to the tools available. As a child going into Kindergarten, my mom took me to get my hearing tested, as the school wasn’t sure if I could be admitted, or if I would have to go to special Ed. I managed to convince, with my mom’s help, the school doctor, that I would sit front and center in class and I would be fine. I didn’t know it at the time, but I had already learned to read lips and was, in fact, doing pretty well with the teacher talking, but failed miserably when she put a record on the record player for a story that we were supposed to then answer questions about. I literally put my ear hard against the speaker of the record player every time, but could never quite capture what the subject matter was and was lost. Yet, when the teacher was talking, I was able to stay on the subject and did well. Fast forward to Engineering school at the University of Maine and there I was with my desk pushed all of the way to the professor’s desk in every class room. Since I was on the Swim team and doing 2 workouts/day 7 days/week, and those workouts were absolutely brutal, I was exhausted every day. My calculus professor- Professor Stearns, would keep his yardstick handy to hit me while sitting in his desk every time I fell asleep during my 8am class. This was the joke of the class, as you can imagine, as I fell asleep about 20 times in an hour. Reading lips with your eyes closed was not very effective. In class, I knew what was going on only in front of me. It was as if there were no other students besides me. I never, ever, heard what the other students were saying as they were behind me and I couldn’t hear them or read their lips. Whitewater kayaking- the river is loud and we are often in need of communicating with others on the river. What I figured out quickly, was that my ability to communicate on the river, in any situation where the person I was communicating with was far away, was much better than anyone else’s. If somebody was at the bottom of a waterfall, or on the other side of the river, etc., and needed to communicate something important, they didn’t need to yell, and certainly not make a megaphone with their hands to get their information to me. Simply speak in a normal tone and tell me what you need me to know and I’ll relay it to the rest of the group. I became the conduit for all information on the river when our group was separated, which is much of the time when scouting and running harder rivers and creeks. As my kids got older they learned this technique as well. My son, Dane, who, due to being 1 pound- 10 ounces as a baby and in an incubator for 7 weeks, lost much of his hearing. He also learned to read lips and has this skill. Emily picked it up as well as it was so common in the house and on the river. Where my lip reading didn’t work was actively paddling rapids. You either are in front of somebody or just see the back of their helmet. I might as well be 100% deaf when in rapids, but we have enough key hand signals to assure safe passage and it is better than verbal communication 90% of the time. Kayak fishing- A good friend of mine said to me one day while fishing- I would rather not come fishing with you if you are not wearing your hearing aids. I am fishing alone. Like whitewater kayaking, when fishing you are almost never face to face with others. Lip reading is impossible and I simply am fishing alone in proximity to others, but with no real communication. I am used to it, and enjoy fishing alone, or at least knowing others are around, but it is not a social experience. Wearing hearing aids changes that 100% and suddenly I am in the conversation and others enjoy knowing they are heard. Fish on!. Business- working is a tough one. Meetings over the years are pretty useless without hearing aids. I would have 12 person meetings at Jackson Kayak, for example in a board room, and the subject would get away from me and I would just leave. Send me an email with a summary. I had no chance of keeping up and knowing who was talking early enough to look at them and read their lips. Hearing aids, immediately put me back in the driver’s seat. My team would ask me if I had my hearing aids before each meeting to know if I was part of the conversation or not. Family Life- my wife, Kristine, bears the brunt of my hearing loss. I work from home, mostly, and have since 1991 when we decided that would be our rule. Only working from home, no going to work. We also homeschooled our kids and lived in an RV for 8 years full time and 6 months/year after that to this day. I spend nearly all day, everyday with Kristine, except when on the water or doing trips she doesn’t want to go on. Communication is key. Unfortunately much of my time over the years didn’t include hearing aids. I would forget to do stuff she asked of me, do the wrong things, or simply not pay attention and irritate her on a regular basis. Some of this was simply me not remembering or not listening, but much of where I stressed our relationship, was lack of hearing. Hearing aids coming into the picture was a game changer. In the house she would have to repeat anything she is saying to me, unless we were face to face, almost 100% of the time, and she would have to repeat over and over again until I got face to face with her. Calling me from another room is useless, yet it happens daily, as I should be able to hear her, if I had normal hearing. Wearing hearing aids is a challenge and always has been. You have to have them in the first place. Getting your ears tested and then choosing your hearing aids and waiting for them, and ultimately buying them is step one. Not all hearing aids are created equal. Over the years I have been very dissatisfied with the quality of the hearing aids and they provide a constant reminder that you are wearing them with the annoying noises. Recently, however, the quality of hearing aids have jumped dramatically with increasing technology advances. They are more comfortable, they sound great, and they connect to your phone by bluetooth. This past month I got the latest, greatest by Resound, the Resound ONEs with M&RIE. These are the first hearing aids that I keep going to bed wearing, only to remember I have them on when I lay my head on the pillow. I am in hearing heaven, finally. Unlike every other hearing aid on the planet, the ONEs have a microphone inside your ear, so you hear sounds as they are meant to be heard with your ears, head, and body funneling those sounds naturally and providing you with directional cues, and distance cues that you don’t get with the microphone behind the ear, or on the surface of your ear. I do wonder, however, if I had these as a child, who I would have become. Did the hearing loss play a part in my motivation levels, my comfort in doing things different and being always front and center (in class and everywhere else) so I could play a part? Or did the information I missed and the challenges in normal communication take away some of what I could have accomplished with enhanced hearing? I don’t know that answer to that. I do know that I am happy to have my lip reading skills and the awareness that I have to utilize in social settings that come from hearing loss. I am well known for always looking you in the eye when I am talking with you. What you don’t know is that I never look anyone in the eye, I am always looking straight at your mouth. But it has the same effect- people get the feeling I am paying attention and care about what they are saying. I must say that I believe technology has finally brought hearing aids to the place where those who wear them have the advantage over those who have normal hearing and don’t. I want to wear mine all of the time, even when alone. I am enjoying normal hearing levels, but I also enjoy much more acute hearing by turning them all of the way up and listening to birds, bugs, and other sounds in the outdoors. My hearing is my super power now in many ways, especially if you count my lip reading as part of it. :) EJ This past month I got the latest, greatest by Resound, the Resound ONEs with M&RIE.
