As part of our preharvest planning service, we ensure that all watercourses are protected appropriately. Machine Operators rely on pink watercourse ribbon placed in the forest to indicate areas reserved for riparian protection. In addition to bright pink ribbon, operators are also using their onboard FPDat navigation system to ensure no machinery enters a buffered watercourse.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many industries & agencies have experienced a decline in available work. In efforts to reduce the amount of worker layoffs & idle staff, some government agencies are capitalizing on this lull in regular operations to tackle other projects that had previously been scheduled for public tender. The municipal government of Sarasota, Florida has taken city employees whose workloads have been reduced & trained them to perform GIS fieldwork. Check out the ESRI article below to read more about how Sarasota city staff are staying productive & reducing overall public expenditures during these uncertain times. https://www.esri.com/about/newsroom/arcwatch/pandemic-pivot/

Switching from 8-axle B-trains to 9-axle B-trains has been gaining traction in Western Canada (pun intended). FPInnovations performed a series of formal assessments to review truck stability, braking, cornering, pavement impacts, and environmental impacts of this new configuration. With the results being so positive, FPInnovations aspires to have 9-axel B-trains implemented in other Canadian provinces. Check out the Article below to learn more: ... http://blog.fpinnovations.ca//the-road-towards-9-axle-b-t/

As the nation continues to deal with the presence of COVID-19, many Canadians are postponing summer travel plans and opting to spend that time on DIY home improvements. Ottawa in particular has experienced an overwhelming demand for pressure treated lumber, leaving most stores with empty shelves. Check out the article below to read more on the increased demand the Canadian forest sector is experiencing amidst the novel COVID-19 pandemic. https://www.cbc.ca//pressure-treated-wood-shortages-covid-

A friendly reminder from the staff here at Resource Innovations to use caution when exploring our provinces vast network of resource roads. Unforeseen road deterioration presents hazards to all motorists and can quickly alter your planned route. Be prepared, be safe & have fun out there!

Our team attended an Engage Caf event earlier this week as a part of the Oceans Startup Project. It was a great introduction to the project and to Canadas Oceans Supercluster, the first cross sectorial initiative of its kind. The event was held at SWGC in Corner Brook and had a host of great speakers, a discussion panel and networking opportunities. Weve recently outfitted a Tigercat 845C feller buncher with an FPDat II navigation system. The onboard display provides the operator with a customized map illustrating sensitive buffers, block boundaries and other environmentally sensitive aspects of an operation. This vital information ensures safe and efficient navigation throughtout the entire shift! The FPDat system also provides contractors, supervisors and managers critical productivity metrics that can ensure the success of a modern forest operation. Contact us through DM or visit our website to see if FPDat systems increase productivity in your forest management activities!

The team at Resource Innovations has been busy this summer taking part in various group forestry activities throughout the province. Most recently, one of our technicians partnered with Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd. (CBPPL) to join the White Wolf Drumming Youth Group to plant trees on the west coast of Newfoundland. CBPPL has been planting trees in the province since the late 1970s early 1980s. The tree species planted contain a mix of black and white spruce. CBPPL plant...s around 1000 hectares per year, which amounts to approximately 2 million seedlings! Benefits of Trees: 1. Trees become carbon sinks by capturing carbon which reduces the Greenhouse Effect! 2. One large tree can provide four people oxygen for a whole day! 3. To absorb the carbon dioxide produced by a typical car driven 20,000 km/year, you would need about 500 full-sized trees! 4. The root systems of trees help prevent soil erosion, which in turn prevents water pollution! 5. Certain species of fish like salmonids benefit from the shade that trees produce by cooling the water and tree branches and roots provide space for fish to hide from predators! You can read about more benefits of trees by visiting Tree Canadas website: https://treecanada.ca/resources/benefits-of-trees/

Its Friday and today we are flashing back to one of our more recent projects that we completed for the BC Ministry of Forests (Installation of Change Monitoring Inventory (CMI) Samples to Calibrate LiDAR Data). Our team spent three weeks working in the Rocky Mountains north of Fernie, BC, establishing forest inventory plots to support the Ministrys CMI program. We were primarily measuring forest attributes such as tree species, height, density, crown condition at predetermi...ned plot locations, across a variety of landscapes. The Forest Resources Inventory Division of the company has done similar projects in nature throughout several forest management units in Ontario, Manitoba, NWT as well as here in Newfoundland. Our ability to provide clients with accurate forest inventories through field calibration plots and soft copy forest interpretation helps them determine available wood supply in a given area and thus facilities sustainable management of forest resources for all stakeholders.

Flash Back Friday !! These pictures are from one of our projects where we worked alongside CBCL Ltd. for several seasons collecting data for Emera NL on the maritime link portion of Muskrat Falls. The type of data we collected facilitated the decision making process for the proper placement of the proposed transmission corridor and included: > Merchantable volume analysis > Ecological land classification (surveying and verification)... > Accessibility analysis > Rare and vascular plant surveys > Bathymetric mapping > Wetland depth mapping These services and a unique variety of others allow our company to provide environmental management expertise to successfully guide your projects environmental components in a safe and sustainable way.

Did you know: that using UAVs, you can measure the change in elevation, change in slope stability, measure the volume of extracted material, and measure the difference in the ground surface? In the video below of the recent flood damage in Little Rapids, NL, every single dot represents an individual x, y, z coordinate. Think of a conventional survey where you record a single topographic shot every few meters; when supplimented with a UAS survey, you can obtain many x,y,z coordinates every single meter with centimeter-level precision.

Using #UAS and #drone technology, we can accurately survey, measure and produce 3D point clouds for quantification of storm damage. The point cloud below is of Little Rapids, NL this past weekend.

The team at Resource Innovations were busy Sunday assessing the damage from Saturdays rainstorm using UAV/Drone technology. Using drones, we can assess, survey and quantify the damages incurred from natural disasters using mapping and Geographic Information Systems to produce 3D point clouds like the one below. This 3D point cloud is a very accurate measurement of X,Y,Z coordinate information of Rattler Brook in the Bay of Islands where the past weekend rainstorm caused substantial damage to the highway accessing the outer Bay of Islands.
