Kids in Winnipeg - and elsewhere- in the 1960s didn't shout "Trick or Treat" at doorsteps on Halloween; we chanted for "Halloween Apples!" This was apparently a Prairie phenomenon, and not even everywhere on the Prairies. My own parents grew up in Saskatchewan in the Depression, and certainly appreciated that fresh fruit was a genuine treat. Maybe that's where it comes from? Andrew Kurjata reports this bit of history for CBC in Prince George BC. (Your RESPECT editor was inte...rviewed, along with a Canadian senator, a linguistics professor, and a Hollywood comedy writer!) What did you call out at the door when you were begging for Halloween treats? https://www.cbc.ca//15805988-halloween-apples-sing-song-al

Greetings to editors and grammar nerds across the US, who are celebrating National Punctuation Day today. No doubt Covid restrictions are putting a bit of a crimp in the usual giddiness and frivolity. Do try to have some fun, though! This is a good opportunity for us to boast that Respect has broken free of the CP Stylebook on the matter of the serial comma ("Oxford comma"). We will use as many commas as we darn well please!... Happy NPD everyone! Or is it N.P.D.?

You don't have to be a senior to read Respect! We cover stories of particular interest to older readers, but "senior citizens" are both seniors and citizens - many of our stories are about things that everybody, including seniors, finds important. And it never hurts to keep up with what seniors in your community are thinking about. You might be surprised!... We bill ourselves as the newspaper for seniors and seniors-to-be. That's pretty much everybody, isn't it?
