Compassion harnesses a specific affiliation-based affect regulation system that facilitates the release of oxytocin and opioids in response to experiences of caring and connection. It is posited that the activation of this soothing system can offset or downregulate other emotions associated with threat. Early experiences of care influence the development of this system.
