It’s Misconception Monday! Have a read below about three misconceptions related to women’s health. 1 It is a misconception to believe that strenuous exercise during pregnancy will harm your baby or cause you injury. Exercise during pregnancy has many benefits, including improving aerobic and muscular fitness, promoting appropriate weight gain, and preventing gestational diabetes and hypertension. ... The current guidelines set by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology recommend that pregnant women without complications should accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity over the course of a minimum of three days per week. 2 It is a misconception to believe that plank exercises are off limits if you have diastasis rectus abdominis (DRA). DRA is a separation of your ‘6 pack’ abdominal muscles that commonly occurs during pregnancy, postpartum, heavy weightlifting or with abdominal straining. Recent research has shown us that it is not the size of the gap that matters, but the ability to create tension across it. Difficult core exercises like planks can still be safe for individuals with DRA if they are able to recruit and coordinate the appropriate abdominal muscles when performing the exercise. Pelvic physiotherapists can help you manage DRA and progress your abdominal strength routine accordingly. 3 It is a misconception to believe that pain with sex, medically termed , postpartum (or in general) is normal and will go away with time. Sex should not be painful, however as many as 62% of new moms experience painful sex at 3 months postpartum and 31% at 6 months postpartum. This pain can be caused by a number of things, including scar tissue adhesions from both vaginal and Cesarean deliveries, pelvic floor muscle tension, prolapse or hormonal changes related to breastfeeding or pumping. Time will not address these issues, but physiotherapy can! Remember, ’ 12 - !

Misconception Monday! It is a misconception to think that it is normal to have urinary leakage after childbirth. It is a misconception to think it is normal to have urinary leakage as you age. It is a misconception to think there is nothing you can do about urinary leakage.... Each of the commonly held misconceptions listed above are indications of a pelvic floor. Urinary leakage comes in several forms, with stress urinary incontinence and urge urinary incontinence being the most common. Stress urinary incontinence is the loss of urine due to an increase in intra-abdominal pressure that is exerted downward against the pelvic floor. This can occur when coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting or during transitional movements. It is usually a small volume of urine that is lost and is a result of a dysfunction in the pelvic floor muscles. Urge urinary incontinence is the loss of urine associated with a strong, uncontrollable need to void. Individuals with urge urinary incontinence often cannot delay their need to urinate and lose a large or small amount of urine. Urge urinary incontinence is also a sign of a dysfunctional pelvic floor with the bladder commonly playing a role as well. The good news is that a pelvic floor physiotherapist can help you overcome these issues! Assessment and treatment of the function of the lower back, hips and pelvis both externally and internally, as well as a bladder activity analysis and education about the mechanisms of continence can help improve these symptoms. Give Kara a call if you have any questions about how she can help you restore your urinary continence.

Today is Rowans Law Day in Ontario. Rowan Stringer was a 17 year old rugby player who died of Second Impact Syndrome as a result of three hits to the head not recognized as probable concussions she sustained during game play within the same week. The purpose of Rowans Law Day is to increase concussion education awareness in order to improve prevention, recognition and management of these all too commonly seen injuries. With a new season of competition upon us, please take t...he time as sport stakeholders (athletes, parents, coaches, trainers, teachers and officials) to educate yourselves about concussion signs and symptoms as these injuries can be difficult to recognize. We recommend the Concussion Ed app and the Concussion Recognition Tool 5 as resources to get you started. Our physiotherapists are trained in concussion management and can help you with a safe return to learning, work and play. Anyone suspected of a concussion should be immediately removed from practice or play until assessed by a medical professional. Remember, you do not have to hit your head to sustain a concussion. Hit. Stop. Sit. #RowansLawDay
