At Resuscitation Canada, we don't do seasonal sales. We wanted to do something different, we wanted to help more people, and we want you to help us do that. Check Out The Resuscitation Canada UnBlackFriday Special Here...... https://resuscitationcanada.com/artic/un-black-friday-event Check out this post if you want to: Discover why we don't do sales. Learn what UnBlackFriday is and how you can participate. See why we want to use this opportunity to do something good for the world instead of joining in on the sales frenzy. Take Care, Chris

Calcium Crash: Excess calcium post-arrest creates a super irritating environment for the already crusty heart; making dysrhythmias a bad ROSC party crasher. Routine use is not recommended in paediatric arrests since it has been proven to INCREASE death rates after resuscitation.

Pointy P's: Say hello to the pointy P-Wave where Pulmonale is possible. The poor RA is working infinitely harder than it should be (pulmonary hypertension; cor pulmonale). Lead II P-Wave > 2.5mm high in & pointy, the RA is enlarged :( #12lead #LeadII #PWaveProblems

Doing the Guppy: Agonal Respirations. The breath of death. Those big guppy-like gasps for air signalling the end of life. The respiratory centre making a last ditch effort to maintain oxygenation before giving up entirely. #BreathofDeath #ACLS #CPR

What the DUCT? SpO2 up that RIGHT HAND or WRIST on a neonate. Get a glorious PREDUCTAL saturation for the first evaluation. They will be hypoxic for the first few minutes, but don't despair, NRP is there! Their "normal" SpO2 will start at 60-65% & increase to 85-95% at minute 10 #lowoxygentensionenvironment #tolerablehypoxia #NRP

Thank you to all who participated in the Continuous CPR Regardless of Type of Airway versus Hands-On Defibrillation Poll! The Continuous CPR edged out Hands-On Defibrillation at 62% to 38%!! Get that blood moving and the organs perfusing!

Thank you to Kim Elkins for participating in the case on Friday! You rock!! The patient was diagnosed with pneumonia; however showcased an ECG with ST depression that required serial troponins to rule out a concurrent NSTEMI.

Please remember to take a moment on November 11th at 11am to remember those who gave up their lives so that we could live ours. #RemembranceDay #NeverForget #NeverForgotten https://vimeo.com/54266288... Thank you to Paul Carson for this amazing tribute to Canadian soldiers.

Situation: 86 year old female with intermittent shortness of breath; mild chest pain; productive cough; SpO2 86% on room air; all other vital signs are within normal limits. What are your initial differential diagnoses and diagnostics?

Alienating Other Toxins: What is a toxin? It is an excess of ANYTHING in the human body that may cause damage. That means things like: Meningitis; hyperkalemia; sepsis; oxygen; bowel contents; etc., are toxins to the body. The automatic jump to drugs and poison while rocking through the H's and T's (pre-during-post resuscitation) may not root out the source to the event.... Think outside the box for those differentials! #ACLSEP #resuscitation #HandT

What the Pad? The WHY to pad placement in defibrillation. The apex pad delivers MORE ENERGY than the anterior pad. Which means, if you switch to Anterior-Posterior positioning, the APEX pad needs to be the one on the front.... Why? Because the heart is planed anterior and the apex hits the anterior chest wall when it beats from the wringing action of the strong LV. Give your patient the best outcome with the most electricity!

Comfort Carb: Sodium Bicarbonate Throwing in an amp of bicarb during an arrest just because, may cause more harm than good if a ROSC occurs. Bicarb has only a a few indications for use: 1. Sodium Channel Blocker Overdose... 2. Urinary Alkalization 3. Non-Anion Gap Metabolic Acidosis (NAGMA) due to HCO3 loss (generally a pH of <6.9 or excessively low HCO3 before administration) Bicarb turns into CO2, adding in a respiratory component to a metabolic acidosis creating a higher mortality rate in post-arrest if used without purpose. #nomorebicarb #comfortcarb #ACLSEP

What change would you like to see in resuscitation in the next year? 1. Hands-on defibrillation 2. Continuous CPR regardless of type of airway in place

Meconium: Just Keeping it Classy The stunningly nasty first poop. Sometimes outside the uterus: other times, not so much. A little fetal distress may cause the babe to poop inside: they can be classy like that. If it's thin ("grin"): fear not, a little wipe & a vigorous rubdown are more than enough.... If it's thick ("sucky"): get a little suction-action going to get that stuff out of them, hopefully before that first beautiful breath! Thin and Grin: all good Thick and Sucky: suction https://media.giphy.com/media/HDNcjt5ELkJSE/giphy.mp4

Confessions of a Clogged Coronary Vessel October 11, 2018: I'm feeling a bit constipated & my person seems to be moaning & groaning a lot. I know I need to be unclogged, but could you make my person a bit more comfortable first? Maybe consider some FENTANYL instead of Morphine? Especially since Morphine can make me extra clogged from inflammatory mediators that are released when you give me it. FENTANYL keeps me nice & happy while making my person feel much better.
