Great news regards to tire pick up, the MMSB (Multi-Materials Stewardship Board) has agreed to send a truck anywhere in Newfoundland to pick up the tires we rec...over from our harbours and bays! The only thing is, we must power wash them and make sure they are whole tires, clean and free of anything other then rubber, as well they can only take high way tires. We will need at least 30 tires before they will send the truck, but as you all know, that's the easy part. This is a really big deal, tires make up 50% of the trash we recover. Thank you all for supporting this initiative, I couldn't have done any of this without you! See more

We all hate the sight of food going in the garbage. Leftovers shouldn’t be considered trash, but new ingredients to use in new ways! When entertaining friends and family, I often like to BBQ. It’s a great excuse to be outside on a sunny day and it’s a social way to prepare food. I always err on the side of caution and cook more than enough nobody wants their guests going home hungry! Frittata is one of my favourite dishes to make using leftover BBQ ingredients. Sausages, p...eppers and asparagus are especially good, but you can use any meat or vegetable. After chopping the grilled meats and vegetables, using an oven-safe frying pan, sauté together in extra virgin olive oil. Add whisked eggs and top off with cheese. I especially like to use pecorino, but any cheese will suffice. Place frying pan in the oven and bake at 350F for about 12 minutes or until set and voilà: a delicious, nutritious meal made in only minutes! Matthew Evely is a graduate of the Culinary Management program at Humber College and is Executive Chef at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland and Conference Centre.

This is a great way to turn any leftover pasta into a brand new dish! With just a handful of ingredients, wow your guests with this simple reimagining of what’s just sitting in the fridge. Ingredients: 16oz (approx. one box) leftover spaghetti noodles 4 cups leftover spaghetti sauce... 1 cup small curd cottage cheese 12 cup fat-free sour cream 2-3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese PREP: 15 MINS COOK: 40 MINS Method: Heat oven to 200C and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Set aside. Transfer spaghetti noodles to a large bowl and toss with spaghetti sauce until well combined. Mix cottage cheese and sour cream in a bowl. Spread half the spaghetti with sauce into the prepared baking dish. Spread the cottage cheese mixture evenly over the spaghetti. Place the remaining spaghetti and sauce in an even layer over the cottage cheese mixture; sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Bake in the preheated oven until bubbly and the cheese is browned, 30 to 40 minutes. We can’t get enough of these delicious recipes for reducing food waste and we want to hear yours! Submit your favourite recipes and tips for leftovers below!

MMSB staff were busy last week completing a residential curbside waste audit for the City of St. John’s. The audit reviewed waste and recycling habits within 100 households to evaluate the performance of automated garbage collection and curbside recycling. Findings are then compared to benchmark data form past audits to monitor performance. MMSB supports a number of communities and regional authorities in performing waste audits annually. It’s a dirty job but measuring how residents dispose of waste is crucial to improving programs! #rethinkwastenl
