Perfection is an illusion. When I think of all the energy I spent chasing the illusion of perfection I feel sick to my stomach. My entire life was spent trying to create the perfect marriage, the perfect body, being the perfect wife, mother, daughter and friend, trying to make the perfect dinners, create the most perfect holiday experiences,.......it was forever a feeling of being not quite good enough. And it weared on me physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Ev...entually I became so tired that I stopped and asked myself and ask what is this all about? Who am I doing this for? What is perfection anyway? We are all products of our environments and who we surround ourselves with. We want approval from our family, colleagues and peers. We want those likes and comments on our pictures on social media. We want to feel desired and needed. We want to be liked. But what if we aren’t any of those things? What if we fail? What if we don’t get an A+ on that science paper or John Smith doesn’t like us? What if no one likes or comments on a picture we posted? Should that define how we feel about ourselves? My answer is absolutely not. Learn to be comfortable with people who don’t like you. Learn to fail. Learn to have manageable expectations of yourself and others in your life. Learn to find the beauty in your imperfections. Because social media NEVER shows the whole picture. Couples don’t show the fights or nights sleeping on the couch. Children don’t post videos being yelled at because they won’t put their shoes on fast enough. You don’t post pictures of the Christmas turkey you burnt to a crisp.
