Metro Vancouver transfer stations and recycling depots are no longer accepting clothing or books due to the COVID19 changes. Hang on to your clothing and textiles donations as our collections are also on hold Revivify textile recycling bins are free for buildings with 80 units or more, they are safe and convenient, and the majority of the proceeds support mentoring programs for children across the lower mainland. Have your strata or building manager call or text us at 778.814.4812 or email [email protected] to schedule your bin and service setup and be able to recycle clothing the same way you would paper and containers from the comfort of your own building.
This is a video made by the Deaconess Hospital in Indiana on how to make a cloth mask. The shortage applies to hospitals all over the world including here. It doesn't replace an N95 mask as it doesn't block out airborne particles, but if you have extra textiles laying around and more free time than you know what to do with, you can learn how to make cloth face masks at home.
Metro Vancouver is hosting a series of Facebook Live streams about reducing textile waste. For their next one, Patricia from Trans-Continental Textiles Recycling will be answering questions, going over what can/can't be donated, where they should go, and what happens to donated clothes that can’t be sold locally.
About 95 per cent of textiles can be recycled. Textiles include clothing, footwear, upholstery, curtains, carpets, bedding, stuffed animals and towels. Very little of what is dropped in a textile bin ends up in the landfill. So if it doesn't spark joy...
Some of us here at Revivify don't like it when people find our chip bags in the trash. Recycle BC depots and London Drugs can take your household flexible plastic packaging so you don't have to throw them out anymore! They can recycle items like zip lock pouches, crinkly wrappers and bags, chip bags, plastic envelopes and more. For specific details, you can check on their website.
The Learnary is inviting folks to bring their beloved stuffies to the Stuffy Triage Centre to receive assistance in mending, stuffing, replacing eyes and various other tender administrations. With sewing machines and various tools available, anyone’s welcome to bring in old textiles (if not stuffies then coats, shirts, etc.) to learn how to repair.
