Running in the snow is hard work! It probably comes as no surprise that the risk of injury increases when running outdoors in the winter. Why the increased risk of injury? -Running on packed snow and slippery, uneven surfaces places an increased load on the foot and ankle stabilizers, leading to overuse injuries. ... -It’s cold! A lack of a sufficient warmup or layers can result in cold, tight muscles which increases the chance of injury. -ICE! Need I say more? Tips to avoid injury for winter runners? -Decrease your mileage. The uneven terrain taxes certain muscles quicker. -Heat. Aim for a longer, indoor warmup and wear appropriate layers that wick sweat to keep muscles warm. -Traction. Wear appropriate footwear with extra traction, grips, yak tracks, etc. -Strengthen and stabilize the inversion/eversion muscles of the lower leg/ankle. If you have an injury or unexplained aches and pains from running outdoors, Physiotherapy can help! To book an appointment with one of our therapists, call 780-571-1100 or email: [email protected]

Hi everyone, with gyms closed and so many of us cooped up in our homes, Ive decided to do a home fitness challenge and invite those who want to join in. - Today was the baseline fitness test to assess for cardiovascular fitness, lower body, upper body and core strength. - Simply do listed exercises, time and record how long it takes you to complete them and retest May 1 to see your improvement! ... You can modify as needed (push-ups from knees, half squats, run/walk). - I will post daily workouts to follow along or continue to work on your home workout of choice. - If you do not own a treadmill, or wish to do the run outside, you can do the following substitutes: - 1 mile on elliptical - 3 miles on stationary bike - 1/2 mile walk -2500m row -200 burpees -500 jump rope - The body weight exercises can be broken up in to sets but the goal is to see how quickly you can get through the entire workout. - Disclaimer Please dont attempt this if you have been advised to avoid certain exercises by your physician.
