Revelstoke Food Bank Garden 24.01.2021

Now that we’re into July and summer has finally arrived, our plants are picking up their pace. May and June were unusually slow months. Harvests should be arriving at the Food Bank more regularly in coming weeks. Despite the fact that lettuce and other early-season greens are still growing, we are reseeding those areas with beans and other summer crops to get us back on track. Hopefully the beans will grow as the greens finish up and we can make a smooth transition. It’s a bit of an experiment!

Weeding and seeding! We’re anxious to see this space turned into a waving field of green. Ellen Tremblay has been a faithful volunteer for years and it’s great to see her back for another season. Michal Starling, who’s also put in lots of time at the Revelstoke Food Bank Garden, has joined us as an apprentice for 2020. Welcome Michal, and congrats!... I’ll have to work on my portrait photography.

Do you need seeds? Over the years West Coast Seeds has been an outstanding supporter of the Revelstoke Food Bank Garden, sending us a plethora of organic non-GMO seeds every spring. In fact, there are quite a few packs leftover from previous years. These older seeds still germinate and it would be great to get them into the ground while they’re still viable. Because these seeds are donated specifically to the Revelstoke Food Bank, I’m looking for gardeners who can grow them a...nd donate a portion of the finished produce back to the food bank. If you’re interested in being part of this, please let me know! And if you’re buying new 2020 seeds, have a look at West Coast Seeds. Support the businesses that support our community :)

If you've bought starts and have leftover 4 square pots that you don’t need, we’ll happily put them to use. Every spring it’s a juggling act to to get hundreds of plants started and extra pots always helps. Thanks!

Hello gardeners and enthusiasts! The Revelstoke Food Bank Garden has emerged from its long slumber for another summer of gardening. Because more people than ever will be relying on the food bank this summer, we'll be trying harder than ever to max out every square foot and every day of sunshine. Starts will be going into the ground next week but... we could really use more seed potatoes. If you have a bag or box of forgotten potatoes that you'd be willing to donate, it certainly would be much appreciated. Looking forward to a great growing season with all of you.
