2003B Islanders Win Provincials The 2003B Islanders capped off a hugely successful season this year by winning the U12B Provincials that they hosted in Richmond over the July 17-19 weekend. Throughout the weekend, the girls displayed displayed the determination, teamwork, and mental toughness that have made them one of the top U12B teams all year. The Islanders started the weekend a perfect 4-0 in round robin play. They started by facing a strong Cloverdale Fury 03 team, bu...t with outstanding defence by second baseman Gabriella Papillon and a 4 run sixth inning, the Isles came out with a 9-2 victory. Multiple singles by Emma Knapp and Kayla Baxter led Richmond to wins over the Lakehill Blue Rebels (14-6) and the North Shore Starts (17-2). The two Richmond Islanders teams faced each other in the final round robin game. After giving up 2 runs in the first inning to the 2004 team, the 2003s stormed back with 5 singles that capped a 6 run inning when Kimberly Cho scored on a passed ball. Saturday night brought the first playoff game against the North Delta Invaders 03 where the Islanders bats continued to shine with 15 hits on route to a 16-1 victory. On Sunday morning, the Langley Xtremem 03s couldn't contain the Islanders offence despite multiple pitching changes. The Isles score two 5 run innings on 10 hits while holding the Xtreme to 3 his and 1 run. The 11-1 win moved Richmond into the semi-finals against the always strong Surrey Storm 03s. The Islanders started off strong with a 2 run first inning, but gave up 3 runs in the third to go down 3-2. But the Islanders dug deep and scored 4 in the bottom of the inning to take the lead back and never looked back, winning 9-5 to move onto the finals. The finals saw the Islanders face the Storm for a second time, after they were able to beat the Xtreme in the double knockout format. After blanking the Storm in the top of the first, the hot Islanders bats showed up again. Lead off batter Chloe Maher started the inning with a single to rightcenter field. Consecutive singles by JJ Leung and Shae Sever brought Tamryn Ward to the plate who ripped a line drive that made it to the left field fence scoring a home run and giving Richmond a 4-0 lead. The Storm were able to take 2 runs back in the third inning to close the gap. Emily Smith led off the fourth inning with a single and was moved to 3rd on a double by Taryn Hill. Sarah Dawson then was up next and reached first on a single but Smith was tagged out trying to score. Two batters later, Kaitlyn Eng's single allowed Hill to score 1 before the inning ended. Richmond picked up one more run in the 5th inning, and held the Storm scoreless for the rest of the game, coming out with a 6-2 victory. Congratulations to the Richmond Islanders 03B the U12B Provincial Champions!
